I read but can't find about someone using something like black jack ultra 1000 roofing silicone to brush on flaking backing to make it new again. My carpet is in good shape except for backing. I don't use carpet much so can't see buying a new one but maybe I'll use more if backing doesn't make a mess. Also went to depot and lowes and they didn't have it. Anything else or is that ultra 1000 my best option. I can get online

Plastidip is what I used. Spray can. Scrape off as much of the existing backing as you can and spray on several coats.

I painted on plasti-dip. There was a thread about that somewhere on here. I had decent results and as mentioned scrapped off as much backing as possible before applying. If you DO apply via a brush, do so in very light coats so it doesn't bleed through the backing into the carpet fiber. I don't have any experience with the spray can method.

I redid mine last year and honestly they are nicer than new.
I used a dry scrub brush to loosen as much material as possible, then shop vac it up. Then I used a regular house carpet vacuum and put it on low setting and let the beater bar agitate off loose debris as it vacuumed. This combination did a good job. I had some areas all the way down to the jute backing.

Then I used durabak coating (smooth version, regular formula, black) and a small roller and rolled on 2 coats, 3 in the really bad area. They came out spectacular. The durabak is shiny black, super smooth, very flexible. Two quarts did the entire project - $45.00 or so.

There are others on here that used durabak, do a search. When I did mine I reached out to some of them. They were in the 4th year since coating, and still looked perfect. After one season with mine - perfect.

The Blackjack Ultra 1000 (`$20 for a gallon) goes further than the PlastiDip, but both work great. Lowes carries the Ultra 1000 in the Roofing Dept. It held up on my carpets for 3 years until I replaced them with the Infinity Teak Carpet...

I'll try another lowes I guess. If not then one of the other methods. Thanks guys

Wonder how the rust oleum Bedliner spray works. More coverage per directions than plasti dip

I went through this and gave up...I bought new carpet at snap in carpets.com for $500 delivered.

I used white Elastomeric on mine last year and it's been OK. I should get another year or so out of it.

Local hardware store had Henry's 287 elastomeric white coating. Same as ultra 1000. Just finished second coat and seems to have no more flaking.

About to use the ultra 1000 on my carpet backs.. the one question does it stick to the cockpit floor when in the sun/summer?

any regrets using this?

I have before and after I did the small helm peace to see what I think before I do it all.

It doesn't stick to the floor and it works really well.
