Twin 454 Mercruiser With V-Drives
Good Morning. Want to replace my original, tired old Weber afb carbs on a 1994, 7.4l Bluewater 310HP Mercruiser. I am going with the edlebrock 1410 direct replacement. My question is; Should I get the Electric choke or manual?? Do I really need electric choke, do not use the boat in cold weather. Based on your recommendations, if I do go with the electric choke, where would I find power for it on the engine?? Thanks.

Following but no input, sorry. Can you post some details of how you determined that was the best replacement and once you do it, the steps and tips for those of us that follow?

The electric choke would definitely make cold-starts easier. Remember, anything below ~140F is a "cold start" to the motor. With a manual choke setup, you either have to install a cable, or wire the choke butterfly so it stayed in a fully-open position all the time so it wouldn't affect warmed-up operations. That said, on a boat the choke would only be needed the first one or two minutes of running. If you can baby the motor through that each time you start, then you don't need the choke at all.

You could wire it to any good "ignition" source on the motor, so the choke as power anytime the key is in the "ignition" position. If you had a wiring chart for the motor it would be easy to ID some spots.

Is that a “marine carburetor” you are getting as a replacement?

I am careful when installing electric components in my engine compartment. I make sure they are ignition protected.

Selected the Edelbrock because it is a direct replacement. No modification required. Also I dont think the Carter AFB is available anymore, unless you get a remanufactured one on E-Bay. Believe Edlebrock bought Carter out.

Going with the electric choke, they do not have the 1410 with manual choke. Thanks for the choke info.

Yes it is a coast guard certified marine carburetor.

Thanks for the replies. Will let you know when I get it installed.

Yes, Carter is owned by Edelbrock. AFB - good carb. Kinda surprised it's not a Rochester Quadrajet as stock.
Purple wire should get the ignition-switched power you need for the choke.
