Were taking the C.G. Power Squadron Course and in the study book they mention the importance of having a Carbon Monoxide Detecter in the cabin while underway and at the slip , getting C.M. from your neighbor in the marina is a great possibility if he's running his engine or generator when anchored, moored, or docked unless there is a substantial breeze, also not to run generators overnight when stopped
page 111 of the AMERICAN BOATING COURSE..Manual

Also beware of other boaters in the vicinity with engines or generators running. STAY CLEAR CM can drift into your boat from nearby vessels especially if your hatches or portholes are open

VISUAL AND AUDIBLE DETECTORS ARE A MUST

This is what's recomended from West Marine

over $100 bucks..... can't we use the regular detector used in the house for a few dollars???

from WALMART $20 bucks..... Is there a boat, and house detector difference??????

Hi Bill,
I would think your boat would have CO detectors in it. Maybe it does not because you do not have a gen set?
What my past boats did not have that I installed the standard home version of, is smoke detectors.

Also the CO detectors are only good for about 5 years and they should be replaced.

Which types?.....the original equipment? or the store bought???

Both

Both of mine one battery and one 120 have a label for the date and once the battery is place in it or it is plugged into the wall the date should be written on the label. If you get one now for the boat, in five years come March you get another. I also use the battery operated one at home in the winter.

your original equipment is good to go. It is permanently installed and hard wired into your 12VDC system. Just make sure the green light is on and test it regularly.

First time I heard that...time to get the owners manual out I guess

I could not find anything in my manual about any type of expiration date or anything of that nature. I did see a list of places where not to install. One was where ambient temps are below 40 F or above 100F. Again this for the OEM unit in the boat.

I have a Kidde like Iprof has. It's got a digital read out so you can see the change in the level. I've only had it go off when starting the motors and the wind blowing directely from the stern moving the exhaust fumes right into the cabin. Got everybody out, left the dock and you could see the level going down as we motored off. Open a hatch and it blows out real fast! I've used it down near the water level to monitor fumes from generators in the area. It's pretty handy for that too.

While I am not a fan of Wiki here is what they say.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide_detector

Here is what the manufacture says.

http://www.safelincs.co.uk/kidde-sales/Kidde-Carbon-Monoxide-Alarms/

The new style which I don't have says on page 19 the unit needs to be replaced at 7 years and a signal will start to sound that can't be switched (other than pulling batteries).
http://www.kiddecanada.com/utcfs/Templates/Pages/Template-53/0,8062,pageId%3D2728%26siteId%3D463,00.html

You might want to find out who made the original one and check with the manufacture when it should be replaced.

Ken

I also found this in the Kiddie Manual.

Your Kidde CO Alarm is now operational.
Note:
Seven (7) years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every
30 seconds to indictate that it is time to replace the alarm. After
seven years the device may no longer detect carbon monoxide
accurately and should be replaced immediately. To help identify
the date to replace the unit, a label has been afficed to the side
of the alarm. Write teh "Replace by" date (7 years form power
up) in permanent marker on the label.
