Dock master informed me recently that a beeping sound was heard at night coming from cabin. Found carbon monoxide detector beeping. Pressed reset switch and unplugged a couple times but keeps beeping.
My question is....boat is off and has not been running, only shore power connected.
Can fumes from engine area trip detector?
I am aware Carbon Monoxide is a serious issue. Could it be a bad detector or should i test cabin with carbon monoxide reader?

could actually have CO from a nearby boat that is running their engines or their genny.....

Thanks... Im sure its original to boat. I'll check date. Purchasing new detector today.

I suggest buying two for redundancy....can't be too careful when it comes to CO.....

Do they make battery operated CO detectors for boats or are they hard wired? Original one is hard wired.

I had the same issue with mine.
Alarm went off in the middle of the night when I first bought the boat. Come to find out it was low battery voltage will set it off.
I went ahead and replaced the original one, a new battery, and bought an additional battery operated one from HD.

Just make sure it's not wired into your generator start/stop switch.

Don't know what year they started to wire them in so if it detected CO it would turn off the generator.

My 2011 260 DA was wired into the generator circuit and I believe there was 4 to 5 wires in the harness. My 98 290 DA was only wired in with 2 wires red/black which made replacement very easy.

Check my fix-it thread below. I have some pictures of the units I picked for replacements in post #11.

I bought a battery op model from HD to install in our boat. Should it be mounted up high like a smoke detector, or lower?
Thoughts?

The factory CO detector in my boat was mounted just about a foot from the top of the cabin.

from memory it does not really matter where you mount a CO detector....I think CO is roughly the same weight as air.....so if CO is present it will be at all heights in a given space....smoke is lighter than air so smoke detectors need to be mounted high on the wall....

This was very timely. We were cleaning up the boat recently and that CO detector was beeping. I figured it was low voltage. Checked the batteries, even put a remote charger on them and they all were near fully charged. Still beeping. Couldn't make sense of it.

Finally decided to look at the thing. This is a Fireboy-Xintex hardwired CO detector. The green light was off, the red light was on. Dug out the manual...hey look at that, it states that in this condition it means EOL (End of Life) has been reached. And look there, I put a date on the front page of the manual that I had installed it just over 5 years ago. EOL on this model was 5 years.

Just bought a replacement, https://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|135|2290081|2290083&id=3751124 It has a 7 year EOL.

How big are these new detectors? Is rewire needed or can the old power plug snap into these?

About 4"x5"
When I replaced mine last year it plugged right in.

There are different beep sequences with different meanings.

There is a specific sequence for low power on the hard wired fireboy detectors.

While I have 2 battery powered digital display home models on my boat, they do not replace having a marine grade detector in each sleeping area. Home models are not built for the rough and wet environment on a boat and may not stay calibrated properly. It is like my iPad, it is an awesome chart plotter until the hot helm environment overheats it, never had my Garmin overheat.
