My 5.7 260hp carb kit came from mercury with a open spread bore carb mounting gasket. It had the closed type on it with four holes in a spread bore pattern. I know the open one will work. Which is better on a stock closed spread bore intake manifold? Thanks.

I'd use the Q-jet four hole gasket to match the manifold if it were mine.

Thanks for the reply. I agree. I ordered it yesterday. I'm going with the thick insulator type. Its strange that the real mercury kit with all the gaskets didn't come with one. It didn't have the air horn to spark arrestor gasket either. It was sealed in plastic, so I think it was complete. Its not like I tried to be cheap with the automotive kit. I could have bought it for half the price with the correct gasket and the air horn gasket. Oh well.

The reason for the generic base plate gasket is that there are a lot of different base gaskets used for different applications.
A suggestion if you have the small flame arrestor on your carburetor now. Look into getting the bigger one such as used on the big blocks to give the carburetor more air. The bigger ones will not get dirty as quick with more area to filter.
I replaced the ones on my last boat with the bigger ones they stayed clean longer.

My friend just gave me one last night and it will still fit under the black mercury cover. Mine is the small one. Did it run better? I have them both very clean and was going to compare them. I do like quiet and thought the bigger one would be louder. I thought it was very small for a V8 engine. Its funny you should mention it. Thanks.

Bigger is better, will flow more cfm's and won't plug up as fast. Should get slightly better performance. I like that throaty sound a Q-j makes when you dump those huge secondairies. Reminds me of a car chase movie.

Oh! that reminds me of the good old days. Flipping over the air filter lids on our cars for that sound. We thought it was so cool. I guess I'm showing my age by wanting quiet. I do however think the original one was very small. The black cover fits over it fine, so I will be going with the big one. Thanks for the input.
