Believe it or not, no. Any idiot with enough cash can buy himself a big boat and then go bore holes in the water. The license to which they are referring is a license to carry passengers for hire. In the US a pleasure boat captain (boat driver) who is not carrying paying passengers does not need a USCG license. Most private boat owners who get licenses do so because of the training and experience licensing requires.......and they are safer on the water as a result.


Most states are now requiring completion of safe boating courses to operate a power boat, but those laws are usually graduated by a prefacing statement like "Any operator born after 1981 must complete a safe boating course........" Therefore, anyone older than the date prescribed does not need a license.

A license doesn't make a boat driver run on the right side of the channel, slow down for on-coming traffic or to reduce wakes in crowded areas. Unfortunately, the licensing process can't control common sense or courtesy on the water.

That's what happens here!!! We are obliged to get a license but it really seems no one remembers how to behave on the water... :smt013

I believe in the US-If the boat is 65ft or above you need a licenced capt aboard.
