Here we are coming into mystic. Beautiful clear day.
This is the next day. We ended up staying in Mystic a couple of extra days.
Once you hit around the Bridgeport area, you can stay on the CT side or jump across to the LI side.
We enjoyed Mystic. Essex was nice but not much to do there except wander a cool little town, you can also take a steam train tour and then a ferry boat tour up the river . Norwalk Cove has a nice beach, pool, eats, and a lot of CSR's dock there. Northport is nice on the LI side. Port Washington is nice as well, we slipped there for a season and enjoyed it.
While you can normally cruise at 30mph, you'll more likely cruise in the low 20's unless it's really really flat. Once you hit around the CT/NY border, the boat traffic in that area on a nice weekend will get crowded. City Island is the busiest area, just tons of sail boats, fishing boats, barges, cruisers etc... All crammed into a narrow channel.
don't fear hell's gate, it looks spooky but just plane over the whirlpools and you'll skip right over them.
Once you get into the east river, back off the throttles and take your time, watch for debris, and enjoy the sites. But more important, watch for the ferry boats, water taxis, tour boats, barges. they throw big wakes and the wakes bounce off the walls and come back for more.
In NYC, you'll want to stay in Liberty Landing in NJ. a $2 water taxi will pick you up at the marina and drop you downtown NYC. There's lots of activity in NYC harbor, lots of debris too. But the sites are just amazing.
