Here we are coming into mystic. Beautiful clear day.

This is the next day. We ended up staying in Mystic a couple of extra days.

Once you hit around the Bridgeport area, you can stay on the CT side or jump across to the LI side.

We enjoyed Mystic. Essex was nice but not much to do there except wander a cool little town, you can also take a steam train tour and then a ferry boat tour up the river . Norwalk Cove has a nice beach, pool, eats, and a lot of CSR's dock there. Northport is nice on the LI side. Port Washington is nice as well, we slipped there for a season and enjoyed it.

While you can normally cruise at 30mph, you'll more likely cruise in the low 20's unless it's really really flat. Once you hit around the CT/NY border, the boat traffic in that area on a nice weekend will get crowded. City Island is the busiest area, just tons of sail boats, fishing boats, barges, cruisers etc... All crammed into a narrow channel.

don't fear hell's gate, it looks spooky but just plane over the whirlpools and you'll skip right over them.

Once you get into the east river, back off the throttles and take your time, watch for debris, and enjoy the sites. But more important, watch for the ferry boats, water taxis, tour boats, barges. they throw big wakes and the wakes bounce off the walls and come back for more.

In NYC, you'll want to stay in Liberty Landing in NJ. a $2 water taxi will pick you up at the marina and drop you downtown NYC. There's lots of activity in NYC harbor, lots of debris too. But the sites are just amazing.

Thank you guys. So after Mystic, would it be better to cross LI Sound, and cruise along the LI side, or would it be best to stay along the CT coast?

Legal......

How about you ditch your parents, bring some chics (over 18 of course) and we take off.....Just kidding mom and dad.......It is nice to see you so passionate about boating.....Thats how I was your age and still am.....Make sure to thank your mom and dad for such a great opportunity they are providing for you........

Paint,When do you plan on being in Block?? I am trying to plan a Mem. Day trip and wondering which direction to go in. Give me your thoughts.

I would stay on the CT side, many places and ports to get fuel, cover etc...

After Mystic (heading toward NYC), do you have any port recommendations? Bridgeport? Greenwich? We'd need something close to hotels (we don't have a cabin...)

Thanks.

I would definitely avoid Bridgeport. Not a good area. The nicest place to stay on the Conn side if you're looking for a room would be the resort marina at Old Saybrook. The have a spa and a first class marina. Located just north of the I95 bridge, they're only about 10 mins north of the mouth of the Conn. river. From there your next best bet is about 2 1/2 hours west at Danfords of Port Jefferson. Nice marina and hotel there and great restaurants.

jg300da- Thanks. Just looked at the Resort Marina at Old Saybrook. Looks like a good place to stop.

Any suggestions on how to break up the trip into 3 or 4 days (assuming perfect weather, and being able to leave each port the following morning).

So far...
1) Newport
2) Mystic
3) Old Saybrook (but this might not get us as far enough from Mystic... might want to get a little farther)

I wonder if Old Saybrook to NYC would be too long of a ride for a straight shot...

I'll say yes. I know it takes me approx 2 1/2 hrs to reach Old Saybrook form Port Jefferson and it's another 2 1/2 - 3 hrs from Port Jeff to lower NY harbor, so that's a 5+ hour trip for you. Too long in a boat that size considering how rough the water can be in the Sound.
There are a lot of great places to stop on the Conn side. East from Mystic are Old Saybrook, Clinton, Milford, Stratford, Norwalk, Stamford, all nice ports with great marinas. What makes Old Saybrook and Port Jeff unique is that they have first class marinas AND hotels. I don't know of any other combination like that between Port Jefferson and NYC. Maybe City Island?

Thanks, but I'm a bit surprised. I calculated that from Old Saybrook to NYC would take 2.5 hours cruising at 30mph.

What do you typically cruise at? Hmm...

Norwalk, stamford ,Greenwich all have hotels within a few minutes cab ride. Old Saybrook would be great but I agree you want a few more miles behind you.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Definitely better to get a few more miles behind us from Mystic.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like Norwalk Cove Marina would make the most sense.

Thanks, just figured it would be ~180 miles one way.
I know it all depends on conditions, wind, etc. but if I averaged 30mph for the entire trip, it would take 6 hours. Obviously this would not be a race, as we would leave ourselves plenty of time on each leg of the trip.

Bush,
While you're still working on your float plan I think the 180miles in 6hrs is extremely optimistic number and not very realistic. Plan on not having flat seas and travelling at slower speed. Doing 30mph avg sounds too fast. I know that your boat can cruise at this number but bouncing around for hours will be tiring. So, I suggest to do it in 2-3 legs. You run for couple of hours and take a break. If seas are flat and you're able to maintain the good speed you'll be able to decide on skipping one stop. The bottom line is don't be too agressive with your float plan.

Good luck,
Alex.

Actually I'm a little west of Port Jeff, 3-4 miles. The mouth of the Conn river is approx 58 miles from Stony Brook Harbor. Plus you have to account for the no wake time in the harbor getting to the Sound and back into Danfords, another 2 miles or so.
And you can forget about the 30mph cruise speed. It's just not realistic in the LI Sound most days. We usually cruise 23-25mph traversing the Sound.
Recheck your mileage calculations.
