At my wife's urging I replaced all the brass-trimmed cabinet hardware and brass reading lights in the 03 420 DA with chrome to give the boat a freshened interior appearance. We swapped out the brass Cantalupi 12v reading lights for Cantalupi 12v chrome models, and went to the Hafele USA website to order new chrome cabinet hardware. (Thanks to geriksen for the tip).

So--the 03 420DA is looking quite good in the salon, and I have (4) Cantalupi 12v reading lights for sale. PM me if you are interested; they work fine, but my wife was tired of the brass.

Skip,

I am wanting to do just the same thing. Brass, while nautical, simply makes the interior look dated to me. Was replacing the hardware simple for a good do it yourselfer? Can you post any after pics?

Randy,
The most difficult part of the job was removing the brass trim rings around all the cabinet locks. These trim rings had to be tapped out very carefully to avoid damaging the cherry vitracore. Putting the new chrome trim ring in required a simple tap with a rubber mallet. This was a very low cost, high impact update--the chrome trim rings were around a buck each from Hafele, and the new Cantalupi chrome reading lights were about $75 each from the manufacturer ($150 each at the SR dealer parts counter)
I'll take a few pictures and post them.

I would like a brushed aluminum or pewter look. Has anyone seen these?

Skip,

I found the hardware on the hafele website and signed up as a user in the Cantalupi site as the wife has given me the thumbs up. If you don't mind, a couple more questions.

1. Did you have to remove the doors from the cabinets to press out the old rosettes?
2. Did you also remove/replace the knobs? How do they remove and what was the approximate cost for the replacements?

Thanks in advance.

Randy,
The only door that had to come off was one of the two doors that enclose the microwave cabinet. That one rosette just would not budge.

This is a fairly straightforward job. On the inside of the cabinet/drawer you'll find the Hafele locking mechanism. That removes with two screws. The locking mechanism and knob will slide right out, exposing the rosette. For the drawers, if your boat is like mine, the rosette is very tightly placed into the hardwood drawer front.. I recommend a shot of silicone spray around the inside base of the rosette to loosen it up a bit. I used a center punch and rubber mallet to tap the rosette out, backing the drawer face with my knee so as to avoid damaging the drawer slides or cabinet door hinges. Once you get the brass rosette out, clean the hole with a cloth, then gently tap in the new rosette with a rubber mallet. The chrome rosettes we ordered were/are a perfect match for the original chrome knobs, so we did not replace any knobs.

Reinstall the locking mechanism, and you are in business. On a 420DA, repeat the process 25 or so times.

The small phillips head screws holding the locking mechanisms in place in my cabinet drawers all broke off--they are small screws and the hardwood just does not want to let them loose. I ended up drilling out the holes to reinstall the locking mechanisms with new screws.

If you have any brass door handles, etc. those can all be ordered from Hafele as well. In my boat, for example, we replaced the brass and chrome galley pantry handle with a straight chrome model-you simply measure the distance between the centers of the mounting holes on the old handle and find what you want at Hafele online--so no drilling new holes in the cabinets or defacing/damaging the vitricore.

You will be amazed at how this small change really gives the interior of the boat a facelift.

Good luck with it-

Progress update.

I have also replaced my light fixtures with the Sampei's but in Brushed Nickel. All of my VIMAR brass colored switch cover plates are gone and replaced with Brushed Nickel as well. The rosettes and pulls are ordered, but have not yet arrived.

So far the difference is awesome. Thanks for the motivation!

what did you do with the brass ones you just pulled out? I have one or two that the brass has sort of "rubbed-off" and I was wondering how to fix that?
Please try to post some photos as this sounds like a nice upgrade for alot of us....

Petep,
Send me a PM with your address and I will send you some of the brass rosettes-

Randy,
Updating the vimar covers is a really good idea--fortunately mine were all chrome. I did end up replacing the brass door pulls on the mirrored cabinet doors in the master stateroom head. I coud not find those online so paid the SR Parts Counter a ridiculous amount for them. Still, for under $300 for all the materials (rosettes, Canalupi lights, hafele cabinet handles, etc) the boat got a really attractive face lift. And did I mention my wife is happy with it? That is key.

Are you sure this was your wifes idea or is were you unsure about this mod being manly enough???
Honestly thats not bad and definately an interesting mod. We changed our gold exterior emblems a couple years ago and its amazing the difference such a small change makes. But I do remember thinking those gold emblems were FANCY back in the day!
I had experience last year with how simple the construction is of the latches when I fabbed a cabinet door. Like ya said 2 pieces-one press fit and the other screw-on.
I do recall the replacement button being solid brass and heavy for its size. I don't think the originals were solid brass?

On Saturday I removed all of the brass rosettes and knobs and replaced them with the satin nickel ones. Boy does this make a difference as the cabin looks more like the current generation of Sea Ray's. I must admit though that removing and reinstalling them was a bit stressfull as I didn't want to damage any of the door/drawer fronts. All did go well and I can cross it off my list. Thanks again Skip for the motivation to get this done.

Re: Cantalupi Sampei 12v Brass Reading Lamps

How do you disconnect these light. Do you have to take the panel out or do you cut the wire?????
