Has anyone bought a boat from Canada? What are the pitfalls? Are there any Customs issues or extra taxes? How would you get to RI from Toronto? Thanks in advance.

If it is a boat made in Canada, US or Mexico there is no import duty under NAFTA. No idea what the duty is on off shore boats. You also pay your state sales tax. You will need to insure it in US before you import it. Talk to your insurance provider.
We have met several people who are Washington residence who have bought boats in BC and imported them to Washington. Some have driven them into Washington some have hired a captain. Sounded like a simple process. You need to make sure you have clear title to the boat and there are no loans against it.

Don't do it! Our searays are totally different from yours! For starters, mine is white, and it's in the ocean!

I went the other way when I bought my boat 6 years ago. The trailer was harder to import than the boat, but both were straight forward.

Depending on size bring it across the lake to Wilson NY Boatyard, then trailer it. Kevin I think can handle up to a 35' if not BPM is in Syracuse NY can handle much larger and will pick it up in Toronto and help with all the paperwork.
Or Cross the lake to the Oswego canal and head down comes out in the Hudson but I believe restricted by high from water level at 21' and will take some time.
Either way enjoy the new purchase.

Better get one soon as your new leader may charge you an import tax.

Just make sure you have all your paperwork in order before you go through customs. Otherwise, should be no problem. People do this frequently especially here in Washington. If you have any doubts call customs before you bring it in and they will tell you what you need to do.

Spoke to our dock mate he brought a Cruisers back from Sodus bay to Toronto and said easier by water then trailer at border crossing. He said he called Canada border patrol for what he required and he gave them an arrival time. They met him on the dock took his check and left, oh not before taking their shoes off and having a look.

Fwiw I purchased a boat in New York years ago and brought into Canada. All I needed was a bill of sale and title. They did all the rest at the border. No duty applied. Was very easy. Shouldn't be hard going the other way. I trailered it across btw.

Don't post much but we bought our boat last summer from port Stanley in Ontario. Fairly easy process except the transport company we hired was unaware there were construction restrictions on the blue water bridge so we were turned away ( after going thru the booth they said we wouldn't fit through!) and sent to the ambassador bridge. Tried calling customs to see if we could just launch in Sarnia and float her home to Harrison twp. We were told no because they needed to X-ray it. Didn't think this was correct but wasn't in a position to argue. Customs in Windsor was a breeze. And saved quite a bit on exchange! Good luck.
