GW and I just got new Motorola Razr phones from Verizon.

Does anyone know if there's a way to sync the phones with MS Outlook with a shareware software? There is a software that does it for $50, but I don't need or want all those bells and whistles.

As the resident CSR Cheapskate I was hoping to find some freebie stuff.

What I do with the iPhones, is set up a free google calendar. There is a free download tool to sync outlook with google calendar. The iPhones have a setting to set with google calendar.

You should be able to do the same with the android.

It is all free, and once you have set it up, basically you never go into the google calendar, it just sits invisibly in cloud world and works its magic.

Google calendar can be sync'd with outlook. You might need to call verizon, but they walked me through it 4 years ago (I had the first Driod). Worked great. You just need to set up a Google account. The account will "talk" with outlook and download your mail and calendar.

Good luck.

I do mine with Google. Works well. The only problem I have is if I enter the date into Outlook it will not go to Google. You must enter everything into Google and then it will go to Outlook.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy 3 and have sync with the software from Samsung. They make a free desktop application called Kies. The nice thing is it put the contacts in the native phone contacts folder instead of a new contacts application loaded on the phone.

Hi,

I just got a Razr Maxx (after 2 years with a Droid 2). Syncing with Outlook is fairly easy. Go to My Accounts, and add a new email account (using corp sync). This actually syncs with OWA (Outlook Web Access). You will need to enter the domain name, your user name, and the server name. Once that is done, yu select what you want to sync (mail, calendar, notes, etc). I think it will also ask how often you want to sync. After setting all that up, you should be good.

Let me know if this helps,

Good Luck!
John

NCCamper, I tried to set that up and input the info it called for but then it couldn't connect to the server. Any additional suggestions for this techno-idiot???

Any chance you can return the Razr's and get iPhones?

At the of risk of sounding smug and snarky.....these are non-issues with the iPhone. If you use Outlook you just click an option in iTunes - "Sync with Outlook" -- done. Otherwise you enter your mail settings in the iPhone and then your calendar, contacts and mail are synced...no effort, just works.

Tonka, nope, we're locked in again to a 2 year contract with Verizon. In our area Verizon is the best carrier because of their coverage. I used to be with AT&T. When I switched to VZ I was amazed at how much more coverage I had.

The iPhone is available on Verizon.....

Most carriers allow a grace period for exchanges. Wait another week though because the iPhone 5 will be anmounced on Wed.

Outlook is just the front end to a mail server program. That might be Exchange or sendmail or some other system. The mail server program is where the sync takes place. Outlook typically lives only on your desktop...

The Gmail route is a simple way to sync to most any device, but if you already have an email system in place it's worth taking the time to find out what kind of system it is and then look at the options to sync with that. If it's web based you likely already have some simple (free) options.

I talked with GW this morning about switching to iPhones and she doesn't want to take that step. NCCamper is trying to walk me through the steps to get this thing sync'd but the screens he is talking about ain't the same damm screens I'm seeing on this phone. This should not be as difficult a process as it seems to be.

By way of an update, I finally was able to get the phone to sync with Outlook. I had to download an app called DejaOffice, then it worked fine. Sort of.

When it sync'd my phone contacts with my Outlook contacts it really messed up the Outlook contact listings. I had many duplicates, many where the company names was listed backwards, etc. It took me about 3 hours on the computer to clean up Outlook. So no I've stopped syncing the contact information.

I had much better luck with Calendar. It syncs that fine and now I have my Outlook calendar on the phone.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks????

BTW, many thanks to NCCamper who took a lot of time to walk this old dog through the procedures!
