The IAC on my Merc 8.1 burned up and melted the plug on the wiring harness. Is it possible to splice a new plug on or does the entire wiring harness have to be replaced? Where can I find a new plug?

Thanks,

Tommy

This may be a case where it might be a good idea to contact Mercury Customer Service. A new wiring harness will be very expensive. Maybe they can arrange to send you just the plug? If not, maybe you local dealer has an old harness you can buy the plug off of?

and make sure you solder the wires and use a heat shrink tubing over the connections to prevent corrosion.

I just had the same thing happen about 3 weeks ago... the IAC went and the plug was fused together at the harness in one big black melted mess. I grabbed a new mercruiser IAC, took the old mess (with the new IAC) to my local autozone and they matched it up to a plug on a 2001 ford Windstar (FYI the IAC valve was also a 98% match to the Ford IAC too - but I stuck with the Merc version). Bought it ($27) snipped the end of and soldered/shrink wrapped it to the old harness on the engine... worked like a champ.
