Hi,
I had very unfortunate situation where boat took on water over night in slip and engines were partially submerged and water protruded into cabin. Long story short, insurance is totaling the boat.

My question is can I remove my 2 year old/new GPS head unit I installed? I have the old head unit I can leave on the boat, but it was over $2500 and would like to keep it or sell it.

Same thing for canvas and isinglass which I had repaired this off season.

Insurance has me in touch with the salvage yard, but I want to know what I can take of the boat without them busting my *alls.

Thanks!

If you insured the electronics and the canvas (most policies have separate coverage for electronics, and separate coverage for personal property on the boat) and you were specifically reimbursed by the insurer for those items, then you shouldn't take it. If, on the other hand, you received a check for the value of the boat and that's it, you'd be justified in removing the items you received no reimbursement for.

Between you, me and the fencepost, I'd remove the Garmin and the canvas, along with the rest of your personal property ASAP unless it's CLEAR AS DAY from the pay out, that the insurer specifically reimbursed you for these items, in addition to the value of the boat itself.
