We were on the north shore of Maui last week and saw two naval vessels out in the swells off Hookipa Beach lookout. The vessels looked like this:

The boats were disappearing in the swells except for the upper portion of their masts above their radar. I would like to know the type and length of this vessel to get an idea of the height from the waterline to the top of the mast. This will allow a guess at the height of the swells which were forecast to be 20 feet.

I ?think? it's a spec ops cyclone class patrol boat. 179' LOA * 25' beam. No height given. You'd probably need a Gulfstream to catch it and if you did, you would not want to mess with the crew.

I got a response from pplourd on the Hull Truth forum:

Thanks. That seems like a more likely length than 179 feet. Based on a mast height of 38 feet, it would take a 25 foot swell to hide the radar.

Also, the daily shipping schedule for Kahului Harbor for Feb. 8 2012 references 2 TWR vessels (TWR 7 & TWR 8) as incoming. I expect I could have found this faster if I had Lisbeth Salander on contract.

That Retired Coasty was the Captain of that boat. See his notes:
What are you doing now:
I am Captain of the torpedo
retrieval boat #7 out of Pearl Harbor. We are a training platform for the
submarines and we retrieve torpedo's that the subs use for practice. We often
make trips to Kauai to bring back torpedos that are used off Barking Sands
missle base. I have the best office anywhere. :)
Maybe they were out there picking up some rounds? What a job that must be...
