Is it possible to convert a slant back canvas that covers the back of the boat to a bimini top?

A friend of mine has a 2007 40 Sundancer with the stock "slant" back curtain, he took 2 adjustable boat hooks and stuck them handle side down into his flush mount rod holders that are located in the gunwhale and strecthed the center (the 40 has a 3 piece rear canves) canves to the "hooks" on the boat hook attaching using small bungee cords... It actually works well on his boat and doesn't look all that bad!

Interesting - how did he connect the boat hooks to the canvas?

You can convert to camper canvas if that's where you are going. How much of the existing slant material can be used... not sure, but I would think it would better serve as the bottom/back on the same snaps.

We had a bikini constructed that attaches to the existing soft top frame with rear supports. The normal aft curtain gets stowed. It certainly keeps us out of the sun!

On our 330 we had a new bimini made that extended all the way back to the transom so the aft curtains would hang vertical. We are in a desert area and I didn't want a lot of dust settling on the isinglass. We also had a full set of windows and screens made for it.

The screens were nice for keeping bugs out, but also they kept the cockpit temps down about 20 degrees from what the outside temps were. When it's over 110 outside, having it a little cooler inside makes it feel pretty good inside.

Thanks folks- any photos would be helpful.

Also, I am thinking of purchasing a bimini frame from one of the catalogs to attach to the slant back to. The largest pre-made frame I found was 103", would that work for a boat with a 10.5' beam ?

Would anybody be able tell me the width and hieght of thier bimini frame?

Anthony, I traded the boat in so I can't get any measurements. I do have lots of pics somewhere on here. If you want to see them, PM me with an email address and I'll send them to you.

When we had ours made I wanted it done with NO supporting poles at the stern. I didn't want the view spoiled and also didn't want the poles to become hand holds when people are getting on or off the swim platform.

The guy who built it runs a very successful canvas shop in Portland, OR. He built it using 1" stainless tube, blue sunbrella and isinglass instead of the plastic that can be rolled.

He built a "crown" into it so the centerline was higher than the sides to allow water to driain off, and he built an extra side-to-side support mid way back in the cockpit to maintain that crown over the length of the bimini.

It was tight enough that it didn't flap when we were running on plane. It was a bit difficult to put the sunbrella up and take down, but that task was made much easier by only starting each zipper and not zipping them until all the panels were in place.

Again, if you want pics I have some I can email to you.
