I have a 2002 340 Sundancer with 8.1 Horizons.
Last year i was not able to get all of the oil out with a oil extractor. Only about six guarts of oil. I havd used this pump on other boats and have not had a problem. Does anyone think it is possible that the engines are so far off from level that the end of the dipstick is out of the oil and there is three more quarts on the stern side of the pan? I have vdrives so the engines are in there backwards. The top of the dipstick is at the stern side but the bottom may go towards the bow. I checked yesterday and i know the boat is not level. The back of this boat is heavy with two 8.1's

Are you using the kind that goes over the dipstick tube? Or the smaller tube that goes inside the dipstick tube down to the oil pan?

I had the 8.1 in a previous boat. I used the fitting that went over the dipstick and always got over 8 qts out. Is the engine warmed up and oil thin when extracting? If using the small tube inside the dipstick, you can insert it as far as you need to get to the oil.

Inside the tube. It feels like the tube bottoms out and will not go any farther

On my 8.1 the dipstick tube came out the bottom of the oil pan so it was the lowest point in the oil pan, So I would use a hose that want over the tube an would always get it all.
Check the dipstick tub and see were it come from on your oil pan, If it come from the bottom of the oil pan and has a sharp bend to go under the oil pan that bend might be stopping you from going to the bottom of the oil pan.
Try pulling it from the dipstick tube.

I have the same problem with my 7.4L. The tube needed to basically touch the bottom of the oil pan internally, but I didn't bend it down far enough when I rebuilt the motor. The dipstick tube isn't big enough to snake another tube from my Mityvac down either. Now I'm installing the drain hose in the bottom of the pan that I let everyone talk me out of. It would have been so much easier with the engine out of the bilge.
I don't want to drain the oil out of the bilge drain hole like some kits show. I want to be able to suck it out the pan through the drain hose hooked to the bottom of the pan. That's the only way you'll know for sure you've gotten all the old oil out and you're replacing it with the right amount. Like was mentioned previously, the motor being at the wrong angle will give false dipstick readings. Especially if you're on a trailer or on the hard etc.

Is the boat still in the water, or out on stands? Is the shortage on one engine or both? Finally, are you sure there is oil left behind, or just that you pumped less than capacity?
Henry I do not know for a fact that there is still oil in the pan. I do know i check it all summer and there is no way i am runing it three quarts low. This happen last year and again this year. So I have a new filter and some new oil and some old oil. The boat is still in the water. It is hard to get a level on the engine but tried it a few place and i am sure it is lower in the stern of the boat. This did happen on both engines. I got six quarts out of one and five out of the other one

My oil looks so good at the end of the season I don't sweat the quart and a half that is probably still in there.
