I just bought a 1977 240 weekender with 260 mercruiser that I haven't run. I'm not counting on it running but I'm hopeful!

PO reports that it ran good wen it was winterized & stored 3 years ago. It has about a 1/2 tank of the 3 year old old gas in it.

When Spring comes and I start it (hopefuly) the first time I'd like to use fresh gas from an outboard tank to give it a fighting chance. Is that ok to do?

Also, should I just dump the old gas or can it be salvaged by mixing in fresh gas with the old? I don't relish the thought of disposing of 40 gallons of old gas but i'll do what is necessary.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

yes, you can use 6 gal outboard tank. You may have to install some fittings so that it connects to the inlet gas line. you should look at the way the gas tank feeds a in line gas filter, maybe on the bulk heat in the engine compartment, and feeed the aux tank through there, and try to keep the aux tank out of the engine compartment for safty reasons. As for the 3 year old gas, I would not use it, you dont know how it was stored, you might be taking too many chances in using it.
