Bought the system used and have it installed and want to test it before I put the boat away and before its too late if an issue arises.
Can I test a KVH M3 satellite without directv account?

Seems like you should be able to power it up, find the satellites, then get the message on your screen from DirectTV that says you need to activate service. I got a similar message between the time the PO of my boat cancelled her service and I activated mine. I believe in order to get such a message, DirectTV has to be getting a signal from your box.

I did the activation with KVH today and they said I should get a picture on Chanel 100. Ill try it tomorrow and call directv if I still don't get anything.

I had one card and it seems after talking with KVH and directv I can get channel 100 as long as I put the card in the unit. All seems to be working fine so time to button things back up and wait for spring.
