Hi all,

Long story short I f'ud up my lower unit. I bought another complete alpha 1, but do not know what gear ratio it is. It was also behind a 350, but I know there were some very minor gear ratio changes. My question is, can I just slap my new lower unit on regardless of gear ratio, of would that cause binding? Or does the lower unit even have a ratio to begin with?

Thanks!

gear ratio determined by the gears in the upper unit - assuming thsame generations - just swap the lower

Gears are sold as a matched set. I would not try and mix them up it could get really costly.

This may be true for the two "matched sets" (the uppers and lowers at the 90 degree angles) but the upper and lower units are connected by a drive shaft so changing either complete half is OK

So I ended up getting it all buttoned up after buying a complete alpha 1 off a friend.

This got me thinking so I could have a spare. On my lower, I messed up something with the shifter when I tried to force the upper & lower together, it no longer smoothly operates and shifts by hand and is stuck in foreward. How much do you think it would cost to have that rebuilt? the rest of the lower seems fine.

So it will not come out of gear now?
