on marine electrical systems? I have only a basic understanding of electricity and I really need to sharpen that knowledge considering my habit of buying 20 year old boats. 
Can anyone suggest a good book

I think the power squadron offers courses and books on boat systems. Have you check with them?

pakmule, we (USPS) do offer a marine electronics course. At present, you must be a member of the Power Squadron to attend it.

The Marine Electrical and Electronics Bible by John C. Payne
Marine Electronics Handbook: Choice, Installation and Use by Colin Jones
Both are pretty decent. You can probably get them through Amazon.
