Hey all,

I am looking to replace a 1995 5.7 reverse rotation motor. I've just went thru this painful process and the new motor crapped out as well. (Bad main bearing in less than 10 hours) Warranty is crucial, I want someone who will stand behind their product.

Can anyone out there recommend a reputable source for a reman'd longblock? or a source for a new marine longblock for a reverse rotation application? I am already out several grand and don't want to have to do this again...

I've been burned by Rapido and have been told to stay away from Jasper. Is there a good rebuilder out there? According to three different mechanics I've talked to, they won't use anything but a new Merc motor.

Thanks! Dan

Marina friends in my area have had great luck with Jasper remans. for what its worth....They have a good warranty also...Good luck...

Find a local fully equipped shop that builds engines. Then rebuild the one you have. Fleet operators and racers know good engine shops.

Best regards,
Frank

Can you elaborate on how you got burned by Rapido?? I was going to order a short block from them this week. I did some homework on them and your post is the first with any negative comments that I could find. If you don't want to bash them here on the forum, then please PM me with some details. I need to order my engine soon and if they are not reputable then I need to start searching for another company.

I understand Mercruiser has just cut the prices on lots of pars. It seems some distributors were buying complete repower packages then breaking them up and selling the outdrives, transom assys and engines separately. Merc realized they were losing business this way and is attempting to compete by reducing prices. Go to a good Mercruiser dealer and ask about both new and remanned engines.........who knows, you might get lucky.

My dock partner has an 88 270 with twin small blocks with alpha drives. His boat was a prior salty and after about 15 hours one of his cylinder heads dissentegrated into the cylinder causing damage beyond rebuild. We both work for a GM dealership and did alot of research and ended up with a Jasper Long block. Granted this was not a reverse engine but it has run flawlessly for 2 years now. I wouldnt be afraid to do business with them. They're warranty is 2 years. If you are gonna have problems it will most likely be in 2 years and they pay labor. I would make sure you tell them it is counter rotation though. Good luck Dan
