I am replacing several small sections of my cabin carpeting due to a couple discoloration spots that are driving me crazy.

I would like a recommendation on carpet adhesive. Also, any tips on removal/prep/gluing would be appriciated.

I am using the stock Sea Ray cabin carpet which (for this application) does NOT have foam backing.

Thanks!
Jason

I can't make a recommendation on the type of glue to use. I've removed carpet, but never glued any back in. There are others on this board that have (I've seen the posts of their projects), so I'm sure someone else can be more helpful.

However, to remove it will require nothing less than brute force as the glue that Sea Ray uses makes crazy glue run away and hide in shame... Some combination of things like razor blades, scrapers, chisels, Magilla Gorilla, etc.

Can I make a suggestion? If you're lucky enough that these spots are only on horizontal sections of the floor... Just install carpet runners (typically made out of Sunbrella canvas type material) in a color of your choice. A few well placed snaps in the floor and then make a pattern.

Another option is fabric spray paint. If you can find a color that closely matches, you can spray it on and lightly brush it in to the main spot. Then gently feather the color into the surrounding area.

Dennis,

I appreciate the advice. The spots are on the horizontal part of the floor and most are already covered by the runners now. Problem is some of the spots extend beyond what the runners hide. I am bothered that they are there to begin with, covered or not, so I feel like I have to fix it.

I might have considered giving the paint a shot but I already have $250 invested in non-returnable Sea Ray carpet so I pretty much have to move forward with this.

Question- Is it wood under the carpet or gelcoated fiberglass?

All this because the idiots that were hired to clean my boat before I bought it decided to use bleach on the cabin carpets- BLEACH! Complete idiots! :smt013

Thanks
Jason

Gotcha... I understand. Sorry to hear about that!

The ones I've done before have either been entirely gel/glass or a light coat of glass and gelcoat over plywood. I'm not positive about the substructure on your boat, but I'm pretty sure it's not just straight plywood.

Before you tear into it, wait to see if anyone else that has done the removal part has come up with any tricks. I know of none - but maybe someone else has.

I have used an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment to remove boat carpet. Wear a dust mask and plastic off areas as best you can to keep dust off everything.
I used this on the stubborn areas that refused to yield to my variuos scrapers.

Use multi purpose carpet adhesive. Home centers like Home Depot and Lowe's carry it. Removal is best done but using a utility knife to cut the carpet into 6" wide strips. Then get a grip on the edge of one of the 6" strips with a pliers and pull. There will be dust so prepare the cabin accordingly.
