On my way to BiH this year, my Raymarine c70 started acting up when I was close to the mouth of the Potomac and heading into the bay.

The darn thing would reboot! It had never done it before, and once I got out into the bay it did not do it again. That is till I made the return trip and it did it again in basically the same location? It reboot about 5 or 6 times on the way there and a couple on the way back.

The rest of the trip up and back it behaved just fine. Is this a symptom of a larger upcoming problem, or is there a firmware or map chip upgrade I need?

Is this area the bermuda triangle?:smt100

Thanks

I dont think it has to do with software upgrade. You may be having a problem with enough clean 12 volt power. On my units they have done this before but only after I ran the batteries down after a overnighter. If someone would turn on a high draw electrical load such as the fresh water pump, then the Raymarine units would power off and on again. The problem dissappeared after the batteries recharged.

Or it could be a loose electrical connection either at the back of the unit or where the power wire is connected to the fused bus bar under the dash.

The last thing I would try is a factory reset. You do this by powering up the unit while holding down the first soft key button that is to the right of the red power button then press the red power button. Continue to hold the soft key button. You will see a 3 second countdown then you will hear a beep and then you release the soft key button. You will lose all your user presets though.

Hope this helps

I have similar issue, but it reboot on the occasion, not too often though. I had upgraded the software and it did reboot once after that as well.

I had the same issue, on my current boat, happened from day one. When they came to have a look they said it was a known issue that a software update would fix it. I have not had the issue since the upgrade. The tech said that as I bought the boat as a left over, the map card provided was a newer version that the C70 and that is what casued this issue. I think that made sense as the C70 did not have the issue without the map card installed

Thanks everyone.

The batteries have never been low on the boat, and I had been running a solid 3-4 hours before it rebooted.

I thought "loose connection" when it first happened and repeated itself, but after clearing the river and into the bay it never happened again till the return trip. I did check the obvious connections when I stopped that night in the Solomons. Also on the return trip, I bounced the boat about a bit due to the waves and it did not reset.

In looking at the area on the gps, there are several layers that overlap in the area, I had the thought that maybe it could not keep up with the information.

Of course I also had the thought that Aliens were about to beam us up and never be heard from again... but I usually keep those thoughts to myself :)

Today, was the first time my C70 was rebooting many times. I have upgrated software as soon as I got my new C-Map card. If recall correctly, the new version is 4.29.

Anyone has idea what else could be the cause?

Thx,
Alex.

Just watch out for the anal probe. :wow: :smt089 :smt101

Don't the aliens ever get tired of cleaning those damn probes? :wow:

Uh.. Although not a C70, my Navman 5500 was having problems rebooting itself at the end of last year and early this season. I cleaned the connections on the egde of the C-Map card, and crimped new connectors on the power wires at the fuse block. I am 98% sure that SR didn't make a good connection on the ground wire when they crimped it. The wire pulled out of the old connector fairly easy.

I have an R80 that came with the boat when I boat it "new to me." Moving it to the Chesapeake from the Jersey shore, I needed a new chip. The marine store "assured" me that the "plus" chip would work in my unit. It did for a while. Then after about a year, it started re-booting constantly. My GPS was useless and I assumed dead.

I called Raymarine and get fantastic support. 1. the chip will not work and it basically overloads the processor/software and then reboots. I traded the chip and it worked perfectly. Since these units are likely all using similar components, they are likely to have the same issues.

I also took the tech's advice and shipped them my entire unit over the winter to have the firmware upgraded and the trackball replaced. I am really glad I did. There are better softkeys and it generaly seems to just work better/faster.

If power is ok, then a software upgrade might help. Might also want to try Raymarine's tech website or a phone call to them. They tech support guys are pretty good. I know one of their engineers, a guy I knew in high school.

BTW... Pretty sure that the C and E series firmware is not coded down to bare metal like the old XX stuff was. I am almost certain that they use an embedded version of windows.

Update:

I have inspected, wiggled, poked and prodded all the connections I could find with regards to the c70, all good, no flutters, jitters or resets.

My next stop and probably should have been my first is the Raymarine Tech Website...

Thanks for the tips!
