Hello! I need to know if the 2003 mercruiser engines has a three star label, and meets the 2003 carb standard. There should be a label on the engine, and it should say something about it in the manual. Can anyone help me with that?

Fred.

Fred,

Have you tried contacting Mercruiser directly? I am not being difficult, I understand you are in Norway. I have spoken to them a number of times and US customer service has been very responsive, You might try contacting the US office in Oklahoma via email.

Henry, yes I've tried, but got put through to different people without any answer. Once I get my motivation back, I'll try again.... But thanks!

Inboard engines are not rated by CARB. CARB rating pertain only to outboards and PWCs. This is because those engines were very dirty two-strokes. Now that they are all four-strokes, they emit far fewer unburned hydrocarbons than the old two-stroke engines. Since inboards were always four stroke, CARB (California Air Resource Board) did not choose to regulate them.

I had a heck of a time looking this up. I wrote the above paragraph off the top of my head from what I remember seeing about PWCs. (I like PWCs) Anyway here it is.

California Environmental Labels

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires manufacturers to apply an environmental label to new outboard engines and personal watercraft, [Emphasis added - FC3] starting in model year 2001. The main purpose of the labels is to help consumers choose clean engine technology when making purchasing decisions. California emission regulations are stricter than EPA regulations. They feature 3 levels of "clean" low emission product. See the descriptions below.

Go here then click on the three star emblem on the right side under "Ultra Clean"

One more thing. If you have an outboard. I haven't a clue, but the chart lists most Mercury outboards and the number of stars it garnered.

Best regards,
Frank C
