buying a documented boat

There is form for the transaction at the uscg documentation center website. Download it and follow the instructions.

Order yourself an abstract of title. Will tell you documented history and if the liens where cleared.

Have you decided on a new name? You want to be prepared when the paperwork is filled out as it includes the new owner info and new name and port. Otherwise you have to pay again.

Agreed with both replies assuming you meant Coast Guard Documentation.
I did not document mine though the previous PO did. I did my research and did not see the value for me. I registered mine with the state it's slipped in.

This may help:

@mrsrobinson
did you cancel the CG Documentation?
If not, (im no lawyer nor do i play one on tv) i think the CG believes the boat belongs to prev owner....

Dealer did mine. It took us two weeks to come up with a name. Dealer did the rest

Can't speak about Virginia, but documenting saved me over $4,000 in sales tax.

do tell more. I still payed sales tax in MI even though I bought a documented boat from WI and kept it documented. I had to still get a MI registration which triggered the sales tax.

I bought a documented boat through a broker dealer. Transferring if to me was part of the deal, as an included fee of $500. It was an absolute cluster that took them six months. I'll do it myself next time, faster and cheaper and less hassle. If you Google for the site, make sure you go to the official USCG one vecause the others come up first in search

Documented. Did it myself. Actually started the process through a phone call to USCG.

Processing time is/was slow. Started in late October and completed in February.

Now, I need to figure out how and when to renew.

I also did this myself, and also when I relocated the boat to the Chesapeake. You can renew close to the expiration date and do this online.

Another common question is can you use the boat while the documentation is pending. I don’t know that there is an official answer and the Coast Guard would probably tell you on record you have to wait until it’s in your name, but I bought our boat at the end of the summer and didn’t receive the documentation until the following spring. We used the boat until it was time to haul and I kept all record of the pending transfer on board including the notarized (and expired, at the time) previous doc

our purchase process was difficult so when the clean uscg doc finally showed up it was a big relief

That might be a per-state thing. I had to pay full sales tax in NY. I don't have to display state registration numbers, but NY still wants their registration fee and to display their tax sticker.

I DID have to pay "sales" tax. But in Missouri when you document a boat, we have what they call a replacement tax. So if I had not documented my boat my sales tax would have been roughly $5,400. Documenting my boat kicked in the replacement tax, which was $1,400. I do still have to register the boat in MO so they can get their $100 every 2 years.
