Buying a 320...Finally

Check the AC condensation pan under the V berth for rust. It drains into your shower sump & then pumped overboard leaving rust stains on your hull. Our '05 had a painted pan, supposedly good for many yrs, started rusting immediately, was replaced with a SS pan by SR at 3 yrs. I have a very good dealer.

Initial Report: This is what my surveyor told me over the phone, official report to be emailed tomorrow sometime, oil analysis to be delivered Friday morning I believe.

-Engine and generator seacocks stuck in the open position
-Shaft seals leaking, small leak but need to be tightened, repaired
-Bolt on swim ladder on swim platform need to be rebedded, moisture in core but not severe, can be dried and rebedded
-NO moisture anywhere else btw
-Bottom paint at water line needs to be repainted, touched up, all running gear and underwater gear in good shape.
-leaking thermostat on starboard engine, which incidentally leaked onto the serpentine belt which caused the belt to break on our first sea trial yesterday. Fixed belt and sea trial today went well
-Exhaust manifolds are original aluminum but the temps were fine, within limits showing not signs of fatigue. But I will get with my dealer and push Mercury for the replacement of manifolds.
-Fuel cool is gen 1, not sure if that is good or bad but he is looking into the recall and mentioned by Frank in early post and my surveyor will get back with me with information on such.
-Other small items, latches in bathroom broken type of stuff which will be easy to fix once I get the complete list tomorrow.

Sea trial yesterday, well broke a belt, sea trial was about 5 minutes mostly on one engine. So a bust.

Sea trial today was better, ran boat for 1.5hrs, intercoastal and offshore in 3-4 seas. Ran great. Intercoastal fuel consumption, realize boat was pretty much empty, except fuel, 2 persons and full water, but .9 MPG, was burning 26GPH at 24 MPH or there in abouts.

Once I get more information on the report I will continue to update until we own it, or say forget it but reports looks clean of major items and we are continuing on our course.

Thanks again to all.
Next stop, get the stuff off our old boat and write a check.

Sounds normal like a normal boating weekend to me...

Survey is being done of course...and I want to thank all of you for your input on things I wanted to look for that you have had with your boat or you have heard about.

Frank, I informed the surveyor of the issue you described in 'Heads Up....Fuel Cooler and Aluminum Manifolds/Risers'. He informs me he will look into it and report accordingly.

Survey to be done tomorrow along with boat being pulled out of the water, sea trial, and engine oil analysis. Documentation to be gone over as well for maintenance, repairs etc.

I am also taking a Sea Trial today just to get it out on the water and skip out on work a couple hours early. I love living in FL.

Thanks again to all your replies and I will keep you all informed. Here is a link to the boat...not the broker I bought it from but here are some pics....

Is that Halifax Harbor in the background where the boat is kept? Is so that's where we currently have our slip. Nice marina, it's kept up very nice by staff, and is a great location for day trips and weekend trips as well. Good luck on the purchase and maybe we'll see you around the marina if you end up keeping it there

It is Halifax....boat is in H something...can't remember...but I think it is the only blue hull 320 on H. We will be there on Saturday with some friends...what dock are you on?

Congrads trit21, looks like you'll be the proud 320 owner very soon.

That is a beautiful boat! Congrats and hope all goes well. I have the "itis" right now and that just fueled it even more.

Boat looks great - I need to make sure my wife and daughter don't see that sunpad! I have canvas color envy...may have to change mine to blue when I get them replaced in the next year or so.

Congrads, sounds like nothing major. The manifolds would worry me, I would keep pressing that with Merc.

Time to high-jack a thread. My AC pans are all rusty... They make them in SS now?

Mine wasn't rusty, at least what I could see but if it was I will be making one myself, how difficult could that be really. I'll just have it welded at the corners, drain line installed. It bet it would be a lot less expensive than buying from SeaRay, which I am surprised they are even making out of SS.

Tom,

congrats on the boat...feels good doesn't it?...Especially when you when you go into a deal knowing that the entire CSR "army" has your back with a world of experience and info.:smt001

It is great to have this type of knowledge at your fingertips to ask questions and advise. I only wonder how we even lived before the internet.....

I will continue to press my dealer on the issues and report my luck or lack of about issues reported, aluminum manifolds/fuel cooler etc. Thanks again.

Mine broke a serpentine belt last season, bad water pump on the starboard engine. My warranty covered it. It’s a drag coming home on one engine.

Yes, but it is far worse to come home on none!

We are on C dock (C14 I'm pretty sure). There's actually another guy with same exact boat as mine on C (I think he's C1). It's a 310 Black Hull. Yea I'll be out Sunday for sure taking some relatives out to lunch for the 1st time on the boat and I might be out Saturday as well (might be taking my inlaws and friends they have in town out). Maybe we'll see you around at some point.

We are moving our boat on Saturday, to C-17 right behind you. We saw your boat today, were over signing paperwork...very very nice. If you see us directly behind you, say hi....

Definately.

I was once trouble shooting an engine . . .and blew the raw water pump on the good engine. Unfortunately, the passengers were savvy enough to realize it was the good engine that was down. They were not amused.

Fortunately, I had liquor aboard, so all was well.

Well....done deal. Closed on the 2004 320. Engine oil analysis didn't show any problems, issues on survey were minor and are going to be taken care of on next pull out, small items I will take care of myself on the weekends. Thanks for all your help and advise.
