I am looking for a recommendation on the best way to lift my boat on our boat lift. Is there a recommended type of bunk to use? Is it possible to use 2 x 12's? If so, what is the correct spacing between the bunks?
Thanks, John

Mine is on a lift at the lake, trailer for winter. The manufacturer (Hydrohoist) uses 2x6s carpeted. they should fit the same place your trailer bunks would go. They go between the chines so as to not put a stress point. 2x12s would be too wide. Mine are 45" apart, they have a bevel to match the angle of the hull. The actual measurement chine to chine is 40". This is a picture of the boat on the trailer, in winter storage, but the hydrohoist bunks are just flat 2x6 about 41" apart. They ride just outside the first chine. They are a 16 feet long. The trailer bunks are only 11.5', but they have a bow roller to carry the forward weight. Just make sure the bunk extends beyond the transom a little bit.

It also depends on the lift you have. Most of the Hydrohoist lifts I have seen orient the bunk like a trailer - ie a 2 x 6 laid flat so the 6" surface is what the boat rests on. Others like a Doozie stand a 2 x 6 on it's side so the 2" surface is what the boat rests on. My boat sat on my Doozie lift for years, the bunks were 2 x 6 x 8, they were carpeted and the boat sat on the 2" side. The bunks in my dry storage or oriented the same way. I think either way is fine, as long as bunks support the boat similar as your trailer.

Regarding measurements, mine is a 2006, and is 26' long including the swim platform. The boats in the last couple years are shorter, I don't know about chine spacing.

Another question, if I use 2 x 12's, is it ok for the boat to rest on the horizontal part of the chines that are about 43" apart?

Anyone want to confirm this set-up for my lift? New to boating and boat lift. 2016 Sea Ray 240 Sundeck. Chines are 43" apart so I attached two 4 x 6's to lift and putting a gatorback cover over the tops. The bunks will support the horizontal part of chine. Just want to make sure it is ok to support this way.

That is where my boat is supported on it's trailer bunks and is happy there. If you are talking perpendicular to chine then I would say no. Would think as is with a trailer, you will want to extend them enough to support the transom. If not the hull could develop a hook over time.
