Buff Magic and Porter Cable 7424

Talked to a dealer in Michigan and he said that the Presto Super Cut is a very aggressive product, is this what I want to be using on a boat in good condition?

We have tons of threads on the subject, so I suggest spending some time to search and read what others are doing.

In short, each brand has different product for different applications. I would put the applications in 3 main categories: 1-compound, 2-polish, 3-wax. Compound cuts the gel coat, it's an aggressive product that fixes oxidation and makes the gel coat shiny, but it makes it thinner as well. Polish adds sort of like a finer touch to make it shinier. Wax protects whatever you've done with previous steps. So, considering all 3 different applications I only need compound is some spots. But, for the most part I need polish and wax. So, it's minimum 2 coats process. If you have time and some spots might call for 2 coats of polish make a difference.

Alex is right as far as the categories. If the boat is already in good shape, you probably don't need the Super Cut. You could still use it, just use it more sparingly. I used to use Finesse-It II on light oxidation, but really it's for paint. Sometimes it would work ok, sometimes not, in my experience. On a boat, unless it's painted, you always want to be using an abrasive cutting compound as opposed to a chemical cut. If you use Finesse-It, the wheel is doing all the cutting, and not the compound. Presta Gelcoat compound works well on less oxidized surfaces. Meguiars has a lot of lighter cutting products, and 3m has many as well. You'll get a lot of opinions on this subject.

I'v used 3M products for the past 20+ years and a Makita 9227 the last 10. I highly recommend both. It is best to use a scaffold or similar set up so the hull is at torso level, otherwise it doesn't matter how light your wheel is...anything overhead s-u-c-k-s.

Thanks again everyone, had one of those days from hell when everything was going wrong. Started off in the morning with some grumblings from the Admiral and from there it got worse, as I was on the ferry heading to the US I realized I forgot my Nexus, customs people were pretty good and let me through. Then I had to find a UPS store to deliver a package that ended up taking another hour to find and costing twice as much as anticipated.
From there I headed to a marine store to get some Buff Magic and the price was $34, I remember someone here paying around $23 but said the hell with it instead of driving all over to save a few bucks. Drove over to Colony Marine were my new boat is in heated storage and noticed that the service centre there had it on for $28. :smt013, I said the hell with it and went down to my boat to clean and escape the world. It's amazing how great a boat can be for therapy.
Tried the Buff Magic with the Porter Cable and I think I will be needing to pick up a rotary to do a better job. Regardless it was still great to be at the boat, can't wait till spring!

Get some Presta and a rotary and it will do an amazing job!

Yes, I'm a broken record.

Saturday we are heading down to the boat and I am hoping to give the new Makita 9227 a try with some Buff Magic, 390x I still might end up trying Presta but I will start with the Buff Magic. I already have some polish but will be picking up some Collinite #925.
This is an hour trip to get to the boat and I will have my wife and daughter with me so I am guessing I will not get much accomplished but at least it will be a start. :smt038

Today I headed down to the boat again and started out doing some polishing on the stern spending about three hours. Started off using the Makita with the Buff Magic then switched to the Porter Cable using the 3M Finesse-itII.
After that I added the Collinite 925. Hard to believe what little I accomplished in that time but the results were very nice. My back was killing me and I had to take a bunch of Advil. Can't wait to go again next week. :smt043

Just tried the Buff Magic for first time and was impressed with the product. Used the Shurhold dual action polisher and was not impressed. First day right out of the box, it started shutting itself off half of the time. Have contacted the company 3 times now and still no response back from them (may just ask for my money back). Also used the Pro Polish from Shurhold and liked the mirror finish it put on my boat. Will have to check out the Makita 9227.
