Broken VHF antenna, replace or fix?

think i got all that, but you have to admit, the antenna looks better leaned back a bit, makes it look like you're going really really fast!!!!!!

Umm... Well, if you say so... But, I ahhh...

You know, some people like those spinning hub caps and others don't. Put me in the "don't" column.

Best regards,
Frank

I am only advocating a short 4 foot antenna IF you are always leaving your 8 foot antenna angled back so you don't hit things. Having height is a good thing... but it sounds like with all the bridges you deal with, a 4 footer is the way to go... and a 4 footer will generally be fine on the bay.

As a side note, the ideal set up is to have two VHF radios with one hooked to a small 3-6 dB antenna for short range and a tall 9-10 dB antenna for long range.... but I love antennas...

We have one bridge to deal with, that's it. Plus, we are planning on leaving the boat in Hampton this summer so the bridge thing will be a non-issue.

I got lazy one time and paid the price. Leaned back is probably OK running up and down the river, but if an 8 footer is best, that's what I will purchase.

I agree, never know when you may need it. I spent 2.5 years at Fort Greely in Delta Junction, loved the place!

Way out in the sticks!

I launch out of Whittier about 90 miles south of Anchorage. It is the gateway to Prince William Sound (PWS). They got 315" of snow this year and still have 6 ft in the parking lot.

The launch is open and I will be going out bear hunting this week. A good working radio is a must. I picked up a lost hunter last year and he had a hand held.

I decided on
Digital Antenna Digital VHF 8FT 529-VW White 6DB

Hope it fits, plan to install it this weekend

Oh No! Not the VW unit!

Nothing wrong with it. Just having some fun.

With a helping hand from dpmulvey, I got the new antenna installed and hooked up today. It only took about an hour total time. I had to drill out a larger hole in the radar arch for the new cable/connector. Only way to access the back of the VHF was by removing the fuse panel. David was able to get his arm back there. Using the old cable to pull the new one through worked like a charm.

I have not had a chance to test the Digital brand (it looks nice though), but so far so good just walking around the marina with our handheld VHF.

Thanks for the help!
