Broken Shift Cable on 1986 Sedan Bridge

So my brother somehow broke the shift cable where it attaches to the controls. I attached links to a picture of the rod where the thread just snapped off on the port cable. Any idea what could have caused that or what it should cost me to fix that? The second picture is where those rods go into the cables

Broken or sticking cables are fairly common. It just happens particularly on older boats where maintenance is sometimes lacking. A Teleflex 33C Red Jacket Supreme cable can cost anywhere between $40 and approx. $85, depending upon the length you need. It isn't brain surgery but if you have to pay a mechanic to do the repair it will cost several times the cost of the cable.
 
If I were to try to replace it myself, are there any good how to guides or a service manual you guys might be able to point me to? This is my first boat so I don't know much. I do work on my Harley and can wrench a bit.
 
if you can wrench on a Harley ,a boat is nothing. 33 Red Jackets are the easiest to replace
