I hope someone can help me here.
Two weeks ago I lost everything but reverse on the boat. Throttle worked fine on both sides of the neutral position, but the only flavor of propulsion I had was reverse. (no fwd. or neutral) While waiting for the tow I crawled down and jiggled the cable and was able to get neutral back.
The mechanic pulled the outdrive and told me the problem was where the shift cable connects to the outdrive. Apparently there's a ball on the end of the cable that engages a socket and clip in a sliding rod (shift rod?) on the outdrive. I'm told this joint is inaccessible with the outdrive installed, and it "automatically" engages when the outdrive is fitted into position. He said things looked worn in there, and was going to replace the cable and retainer.
My question is, is this a normal wear spot? Does the cable wear only, or is that shift rod likely worn too, requiring more outdrive surgery? I'm having a little trouble visualizing the configuration, (and I'm 2 hours away from the boatyard) does anyond have a diagram or photo they can post?
Thanks everyone!
Cheers,
Bill
