Is it necessary to remove my Bravo II outdrive for winter storage?

Most of the marinas seem to recommend removal and some even store the outdrive indoors. Others remove and immediately reinstall the outdrive leaving them outdoors for the winter.

Looking at the Sea Ray maintenance manuals I don't see any reference to removing the outdrive as part of the winterization process. Is it necessary and why?

Thanks,
Frank

Mercruiser does not say to do that anywhere. Only remove if for service but remember to change the drive fluid (gets rid of any water in lube) before winter storage.

You can keep it hanging off the transom but ensure it is in the full or near full down position. You do not have to remove it for the winter. If you do remove it...You may as well change out the drive oil and check that your gimbals are in good shape and no water has gotten inside the bellows via the shift cable or bellows. Having it off also also allows inspection for proper alignment and abnormal wear...
