Bravo One -lost forward drive

I hope noone has asked this before as I cant find any reference to it but I have reverse drive but no forward drive. Cables are fine (apparently) but trans does not clunk into gear, engine just revs.

Cone clutch a likely culprit?

No suggestion of an issue when last launched.

Something else I may have not thought of?

Any suggestions please.

What throttle do you have. I just had that problem with a quick silver 3000. Turned out it was a broken washer inside the throttle housing.

It was an easy fix.

No forward drive but reverse working fine?

The cable is apparently working fine so at this point we have eliminated the throttle controller.

How old are the cables? Possibly stretched shift cable, or needs adjustment. Those things have been discussed on here numerous times - you should be able to find those using the search... if the search function feel like cooperating with you:smt001

Re: Bravo One problem

I take it then that the shift cable can stretch to a point where no amount of adjustment will remedy the problem.

When I operate the cable manually it will shift into reverse but not forward.

I am trying to familiarise myself with the setup so that I dont get ripped by the boat shop.

It has been suggsted that the cone clutch could be worn, is this likely to occur without some previous shifter issues?:smt024

Not sure about the clutch.

Have you (or someone else) done any - I mean any at all - shifting while the engine was not running? Could've damaged the keeper.

I take it, based on your comment, that you've tried adjusting the cable?

Boat has a total of 627 hours.

I have done 127 of those.

When I first got the boat the odd time I turned it off without being in neutral so had to find neutral before starting but not of recent times.

Have checked cable adjustment as based on another thread I found and all seems correct.

Would reverse still be able to be engaged if this has occured?

Appreciate your input.

"Would reverse still be able..." Honestly, I don't know which one (reverse or forward) would be harder to get into.

When you adjusted, did you "do it by the book" and measure the distances at the shift linkage on the engine? If so, try the "by feel" method.

Spin the prop (engine off, of course!) in neutral - both directions. What you're feeling/listening for is a clicking - in other words, starting to go into gear. If no sound, adjust the barrel adjuster until you start to hear/feel something. Mark where the adjuster is. Now spin the adjuster the other way until you feel/hear the same intensity as before. Look at the adjuster and make another mark. Spin it back to "split the difference" between the two marks.

Have tried the feel approach and there is no clicking or any audible sound in any position.

My reference to going into reverse only related to the keeper suggestion rather than the adjustment.

Thanks

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I figured that's what you meant when I responded. I just don't know - if the keeper is damaged - would it make it harder to go into reverse, forward or both? Not sure.

If memory serves me correct...the shift cable pushes the latch aft for reverse, and pulls for forward(at the drive),so if the latch isn't hooked to the cable you will get reverse not forward.Pull the drive back and see what you have.

Does anyone know if a OL 158974 serial no top box Bravo One will fit a OD 799 numbered bottom end?

I understand that the oilways maynot be compatable.

Thanks

Well, after all that hassle the local Mercury/Mercruiser dealer :smt021spent 7 hours (over two weeks) on the problem stripping gearboxes etc and blaming all sorts of "defects" for the problem but failed to notice that the keeper on the end of the shift cable had broken allowing the cable to bow while selecting forward drive thereby not engaging the shifter fully

Thanks to those who made suggestions.:smt024

I have found a new mechanic who picked up the issue in under 5 minutes.

Well, it's too bad you had all that time lost (and $hop time). But, at least you have it figured out now... And found a better mechanic.
