We purchased a brand new, leftover SeaRay 280 Sun dancer in Feb. Took possession in April and in late May was finally able to take it out on the water. We used the generator two times. It has just over two hours on it. When we started it last Saturday, city ran for 30 seconds and then stopped. After trying once more we laid off. It gave a 62 error code. Took back to the dealer and they confirmed the impeller has vanes missing possibly plugging water flow and overheating. We also a part of the service bulletin for Kohler. Anyone else experience anything like this on a low hour, new generator?

If this was a left over boat (2011) and the impeller was installed at the factory it's possible by just sitting there for years that it dry rotted and came apart. You can back flush the heat exchanger and see if you find all(or most) of the vanes. This happened to me when I bought my boat (used). The genny worked fine during sea trial but the first time I used it it ran then shut off. The impeller came apart and I had to chase down the vanes. Everythings been good since.

There is a good chance your dealer should take care of that for you as a goodwill gesture. I would be surprised if they didn't. It is a $20 part. Probably 1 hour of labor.

Had the same issue on Mine. Lost the impeller after about 2 hrs. of use and after the next 3 hours of use. Never determine why vanes kept falling apart. Finally sold the boat.

On my previous boat with a Kohler 5.0, I started changing the impeller annually. $25 part and 10 minutes of easy labor. Never had one last two years - thus the annual change...

Agree. Change the impeller every year no matter what. Rule #1 - run the generator, the only thing worse for it than low use is no use. Back flowing the hose to find missing vanes is easy. For the cooler I open the siphon break hose and blow compressed air backwards though the heat exchanger.

I put mine on the annual change as well.

It's about 9 months since I did it.

Sitting on the hook yesterday, heard the genny change note, then a couple of minutes later, putt putt, stop. Looked over the side smoke only from the outlet.

Looked in the water, so much crap floating around from the rain and storms.

So expecting to find a clogged seperator, and obviously will need to do the water pump
