Bow Roller Re-Bed

Winter project this year. Had some stress cracking and maybe a touch of moisture in the bow. Removed the bow roller which was attached with flimsy small alum backing plates. Several screws bent. A real pain to get off because you can’t reach the far ones unless you can fit in the anchor locker. Made a new backing plate — 1/4 inch alum and pem nut inserts. Dry fitted and much easier to install. Ain‘t going nowhere.

That ?fiberglass? square... was that used a backer plate in the original setup?

Yeah, six of them. I think its a small piece of aluminum. I don't think they though the bow roller would take a lot of the load -- unless of course previous owners used it to anchor out. :)
 
Gotcha. Truthfully, that's quite a large back plate for the situation... and obviously has been doing it's job for over a quarter century. Some manufacturers install windlasses into a thin, un-reinforced deck with only washers!
