Hello Everyone

My name is Chris and I am a soon to be proud new owner of a Leftover 2007 Sea Ray 270 Amberjack which we just put a deposit on this past weekend at the Hartford Boat Show in Connecticut.

I'm moveing up from a 1999 Bayliner 2452 Cierra which is a 24FT hardtop cabin crusier with a 5.0 Merc with alpha 1 drive.

I just wanted to hear from expereinced Sea Ray owners or even other 270 Amberjack owners about how my boat can handel rough conditions (3-5 ft seas with wind). Is this boat sea worthy enough to cruise in open ocean conditions like beyond Block Island and Montauk? Many times we had bad experieces with our smaller 24ft boat even in 2 ft seas with bow banging/slaming into the waves. Not fun!

Also what is the top speed I can expect on this boat (you can see specs in my sig). Any other info and things I can look forward to on this boat would be awsome.

Thanks Guys!

Chris

The 270AJ is essentially the same boat as the 260DA but with an entirely different cockpit and an extended swim platform. If you have the mid-cabin, it is exactly the same cabin set-up as the 260DA. I have read thru several 260DA postings and that's where you might want to start also using the Search feature. Here is one of the biggest posts. http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=414

A 27' Sea ray will do nice in poor conditions.
Its really matter of....
Proper boat placement, throttle control, and speed.
You can beat yourself up on just about any boat.

What I have found is...
Going into waves head on too fast really sucks.
It sends the bow straight up. Then you will have to back way off on the throttle to sit the bow down softly on the backside of the wave.

Going into the waves at a 20 degree angle seems best.
More angle = Wet ride
Less angle = your shooting for the moon again.

Also find the sweet cruise speed where the bow doesn't rise way up into the air on the approaching waves. Then just freefall crashing down on the backside of the wave.
When this happens....
If you back the throttle off before the bow crashes down on the back side of a wave.
The bow will come down nice and smooth on the backside of the waves without beating you or the boat up.

I got to practice what works for my boat a few times getting caught in 12' wind blown Seas a few times.
While making the 50 mile channel crossing from the mainland to some So Calif islands.

The first time, I had a female passenger in those coditions.
She was having fun :wow:
To this day, She still mentions how fun them conditions were.

Did I mention that I like a 26' Sea Ray for bad offshore conditions

I owned a 2005 270AJ for a couple of seasons with the 6.2 Horizon B3 set up. I would still have it if it had the aft cabin as I needed more sleeping ability. The day I picked it up at Onset Marina on Cape Cod there were small craft advisories and I took her to Jamestown R.I. in Narragansett Bay. My friend who has a captains license came for the ride and we were both extremely impressed on how the boat handled. The boat does not "bang" in rough seas unless there are extreme conditions and while it is not the dryest boat around but it is very sea worthy. I have been out other times when I probably should not have and never had a problem. Good Luck with your new boat, you will love it!!
