I had the bottom done 6 months ago along with all new zincs. The boat was pulled for a different reason and I noticed the bottom is peeling pretty bad in the rear of the boat only. Also the tabs and surrounding areas the paint is gone. Zincs on tabs are rough and transom zinc is maybe 50%. I have been reading that this could be bonding system, my dock or just bad job. Any suggestions? How do I check the bonding system and eliminate certain things. Always something.

Bottom paint peeling is an application deficiency. Surface was not prepared properly.
Only fix is to start over in those areas.

The stern and tabs are in the most turbulent area when the boat is making way. That's where problems will show up first. If the paint was thin I would say they didn't get enough thickness but coming off in sheets is caused by a lack of preperation. The rest is coming off too it will just take longer. I would have whoever did the job refund whatever you paid them and find someone that knows what they are doing.
The zincs are another problem. This could be your boat or could be your neighbors boat. I assume you are in a wet slip? See if any of the other boats on the dock are having the same problem. Check your bonding system in your bilge. Every place metal contacts the water should have a bonding wire attached.
Years ago I was docked next to a concrete hulled boat. The owner used an extension cord and an automotive battery charger to charge his starting batteries. I could not keep zincs on my boat. After he moved to another marina the problem stopped....for me.

Sorry to hear that. We had the same issue and had to have it done all over again. Ours was just a shoddy job.. We paid extra (a lot extra) to have the best paint for our tropical environment put on and we don't think they used it! We had it done at a different place this time who used the correct paint and cost was cheaper too. Sorry to say there's some real crooks out there. Better luck next time.

Thank you everyone. Would the bond or electric current cause the bottom paint to peel at all? Not only from the bottom but from the tabs? Here is a picture I took yesterday.

Your paint issue is 100% application related. I don’t care if the yard used the cheapest paint possible, it shouldn’t peel off in 6 months. It’s a shame that in boating capital state of US they don’t know and/or don’t care on how to do the bottom job application properly.

The only outstanding question to the boat owner would be, how much was the boat moved during these 6 months?

IMO, the yard has to take responsibility and redo the job “the right way”, this time.

BritLady,
What paint gave you troubles and what paint did you switch to?

I’ve been always using Interlux products. I switched to Micron Extra as soon as it became available and used it ever since. My last application (DIY) lasted over 2 years, while the boat was always in water and used 12 months a year.

The boat stays in the water and this is the first time I hauled out since it was painted (due to a shaft seal leak). I have the bottom cleaned regularly by a diver every 3-4 weeks. They supposedly used Trinidad paint.

I dont know what paint was on there before the Trinidad was applied. Trinidad is a hard epoxy paint that has to have a good surface to adhere to. This is probably why is is peeling. That hull looks like the old paint was in bad shape and there was little effort made to clean it.
Get your money back.

Not really sure what they used, we paid extra for Cukote Biocide Plus which our new yard used and is working out great. We also paid $500 for sand blasting running gear to the 1st. place but also suspect that, as within 4 months our diver was telling us paint was peeling. Not only that the 1st. yard blocked her underneath a transducer which then cracked and caused a bad leak! Called them and they said if it was their fault they would fix it (which it was.) We did temp fix, took her back and one of their workers admitted it was blocked incorrectly. Well they fixed it, and when we went to pick her up they gave us a bill for haul out, storage and fix for $700! Also told us if we didn't pay they would chain her to their dock! Needless to say NEVER going back there! Have since heard we were not the only ones that had issues with them, just wonder how much longer they will be in biz.

The painters never did the struts and rudders. Or if they did, they never prepped them for adhesion. I don't like the looks of the props and based on the zinc description, I'm concerned about stray current. If you click on the OP's pix, and run through his photos, there are pix of fresh props. His onboard props have a haze about 2/3 from the trailing edge of the blades. Cobra, if they look pinkish in color, (can't tell from the pix) you have a stray current problem. It may or may not be your boat. I had the same problem. You may want to consider purchasing a galvenometer or have the marina check all around your slip while you are out. If a problem is detected while you are out, they need to narrow it down to a specific boat. If not there is either a break in your bonding system or your isolaters are not working properly. My islolaters are behind the microwave port side forward of the head. I THINK?? our interiors are the same.

I don't know if stray current could cause a reaction on the paint.

Good luck.

David,

I will take better pics of the props today when I stop by the marina. The props have petit barnacle blocker on them not sure if that is making them look a weird color. They did paint the running gear from what I remember.... The boat is moored at my house and I am going to have an electrician check the grounding rod by the dock.

I am waiting on a call back for a bonding test to be scheduled. I was quoted no more than 300.00 with a written report from a respected local company. Once I have that then I guess I will have many answers. Also waiting on the marina to call back to fix the bottom paint

Some food for thought... I had my bottom job done in February and had to haul the boat yesterday for a different problem and found that on the sides there are some areas of white showing now. The diver (me) uses a very unabrasive scrubber about once every two weeks to keep the crud off.

The bottom looked great but the sides look like yours now...
