Bottom Pain cause of B3 Corrosion???

Just to make sure I understand, you are saying your drives were replaced in April of this year and they need to be replaced again?????

Im sayin the drives were replaced in June and yes, they need to be replaced again. :smt013

Wow man, I feel for you. Has anyone given you any ideas about this yet?

If your drives failed in 5 months from corrosion, I think there must me a major electrical problem on your boat or in the water you are slipped in.

Did they take any hull potential readings after the new drives were installed?

Me too!

FWIW..The 3rd season our boat was launched I had my marina install anodes, I took note before launch that they were not MercMarine. I was told that they were aluminum and met the military spec such in such. You've probably seen this spec on the packages or websites. Those non Merc anodes were used up by August. Since then I install my own MercMarine anodes, they last the season (mid-October), drives are just starting to show some corrosion at the water intake and other areas. The lower unit at the prop area is also minimal. Saving $50 a year to protect $10K worth of outdrives just doesn't sound like a good choice. It could be a win-win for the installing marina though! More profit up front...replace the corroded housings down the road.
My original set of zincs was on for 4yrs and I had no corrosion on my B3 drives. I put new anodes from Boat Zincs on to start this season #5 and carefully inspected my drives when I pulled out in Oct. I still have no corrosion. Even on the skeg were some paint is missing I have no corrosion and I've never had to do a cleanup and repaint. The problems some of you are having would drive me nuts.

How much corrosion did your drives show at the time you took off the non-merc anodes? The fact that they were used up might not be bad, your sacrificial anodes were obviously sacrifying. Might you have had less corrosion if you would have put on a second set of the aftermarket anodes. The important issue here is not the longevity of the zincs.

Same here. Zero corrosion on my fresh water boat. My Al. anodes showed corrosion so they were working and I assume so were the two Mercathode systems.
