I have using a service locally to clean my boat bottom. They claimed all looked good and everything looks good.

I've fixed my engine and took it out for a test spin and it came up on plane, but speed was down and took more time than usual. Brought it home and was just looking at the waterline and noticed more than normal growth on my trim tabs. I decided it was about time I had a look at my bottom and put on the scuba gear.

Wow! What a mess! My below waterline transom was a mess and algae and slime and BARNACLES were all over my running gear and trim tabs and even 3 feet of rearward running bottom.

After 2 hours of scraping and cleaning, she looks good! And the performance is back.

A couple thoughts. One to mind and is why I write this. Fouled bottoms DO effect performance, period. Faster planing times and higher gps speeds.

For those of us who use bottom services, if you can, check out their work. Jump in and run a hand around running gear if you can, the bottom and just inspect.

I've been paying $100 a month, the going rate down here, and I'm not happy with this companies service. Needless to say,I'm canceling them today and explaining while my last bill won't be paid..

It's not really the money, although I feel ripped off, but the lost performance and poor handling and excess fuel usage my boat has had. It could have all been avoided....

Sounds like they have a pathetic work ethic

I agree... but, trying to find the silver lining, it shows me that growth really hurts performance! I need to jump in every month and do it myself, it's not hard, I just need to stay on top of it.
