Guys going to go down the cape (area) this weekend. Thinking of some spots, Barnstable is booked. Looking for mooring at night (have tender) and a little night life and nice beach to pull up tender during the day. Mom and Dad only. Thowing out ideas, Ptown, plymouth, bourne, any others? 2 nights and not opposed to 2 different places.

thanks RF:smt038

Plymouth harbor yacht club..morings"Tender service..cheapdrinks..breakfast and dinners.."..sandbars to hang out on outside of breakwater..IMHO shorter trip and great people!!!!!!!:smt038

Yes, I am interested as well. I boat out of the Salem sound area, and spend most weekends in the wingarsheek beach, cranes beach area. Some other destinations a little south of Boston would be great. Thanx.

If you don't want to go too far, Cohasset harbor is very nice. Quaint, nice beach and sand bar at low tide. If you have a tender it makes it even easier. All sand so you anchor grabs w/out any problems. Beautiful Restate and clamshack, plus nice rest. Mooring are usually available. We go there from Boston 5-6 times per year. Just look for Minots's light area and you can pickup the channel. Let me know if you have any other questions you wont regret it. rf

Thanks for the ideas, I may go to Ptown friday night. if we are having a good time stay if not go to plymouth sat night. thanks

If you go from salem, take a route that puts you a tad east of your rumb line route and you will see whales and maybe dolphins........All great places mentioned.....The one reason I love PTOWN is the shows (wide range) nightly, restaurants, beaches, people watching, etc...........One last reason....When I go there, I feel I am not on the mainland like plymouth, scituuate, etc.........I know you are, but more like an island to me.........

Thanx guys. Cohasett sounds good, and not too far. Are there moorings available for spending the night? P Town sounds cool, never been. I hear you have to travel either reall early or real late to avoid rough water. Thanx

Situate is a great spot . the public dock for a night stay is 3.00 per sq ft
they also have mourings that are cheaper

Cohasset has only moorings for 35/night. If you have an inflatible you can pull up to the beach and light a campfire. Not much nightlife but real nice beaches. Scituate is just south. You may want to go to coh. during the day and Scit. at night if you are looking for people/action. Cohasset is more serine.

Agree..Sandbar @ low tide only..1-1 1/2 hours each side of high..into the water to scrub wterline-outdrive and tabs..onto scituate for nite nite..eatout maybe movie..greatbars..NOT SAND:huh::smt038

I was reading this thread because my cousin and her family live in Onset. Why do you guys up there always look for moorings instead of just finding a spot and dropping the hook? If you have a tender, why would you need a mooring? $35 seems a little steep for simply borrowing a chain for the night.

most people do not feel comfortable sleeping on the hook....most people will get up every hour to see if they have dragged........if you dont do a lot of it, tough to ask people to enjoy the night thinking about the anchor.......$35.00 is a peace of mind of enjoying not being at a marina, but not being on the hook either...Nice compromise for many people......

Bottoms in New England can be very variable (man that could really be interpreted the wrong way), anything; sand, mud, loose rock, large rocks etc. Unless you have been in the exact spot before you never know what you are in for.

Even in places I know, I am up every couple of hours making sure things are solid.

I'm also the guy who has 2200 pounds of granite holding down his mooring.

Henry

That was good Henry, in Cohassett I would feel safe with an anchor, it is ALL sand. Of course I would always put on my drag alarm on the gps.

No, sleeping on the hook does not bother me at all. We do it almost every weekend at Wingarsheek. But you do need to have confidence in knowing what the bottom is. I think we are going to take four or five boats over to P-town next weekend. Im looking forward to it, as I have never been. We had a 268 Sundancer for the last five years, and was a little apprehensive about running an 8.6 ft beam over there. I feel pretty good about the stability of our old...new to us 30 foot with a 11 ft beam over there. Thanx for all of your input guys! Dave

Ptown was a great trip that I recommend to all in the area. It does have its "quirks" but everyone is very friendly and we enjoyed ourselves very much. We stayed on the ball at Ptown Marina. they offer a shuttle until 12 midnight if you don't want to go for a dinghy ride. They have showers and are right in the middle of town so walking is all you need to do. Took the boat on the inside of Long Point and it was a great beach with seals swimming within 60 yards. (we theres seals there maybe sharks!!) so we didn't swim out too far. Overall a fun trip, 55 miles or so from Boston H. The ride home yesterday was a little breezy with 4-5 ft chop but it calmed down about an hour into it.
thanks for the recomm. as it will be a yearly trip. RF:thumbsup:

Another spot that I am fond of is Hingham inner harbor. Check out Baxter Marine services for dockage or a mooring. Quiet and relaxing with some great places to eat in town. Also not far from Worlds end if you want a nice place to anchor out and swim...
