Boston, MA ==> West Babylon, Long Island

Gnealon ….. I was wondering how the trip went because I am about to take the same trip this Saturday. (05/17/2009) I am going from Boston (Quincy) to Babylon, NY. (South shore of Long Island) My Friend bought a boat up there: A 1995 38ft. Sea Ray Sun Sport My friend has lots experience, just not so big. We will have one another experienced guy with us. So I am going to help / Learn / enjoy ( as much as I can being new to boating) I am plotting the course on my own GPS also to use a back-up.
I printed this full posting for him and will show him the Clubsearay website (his first Sea ray) the boat was fully checked Surveyed & and also Checked by a marine mechanic. The Boat has been maintained / updated with New Bottom paint / new Batteries / Hoses / Belts / Fluids Tune-up….
I see that the weather is may get a little get bad Saturday night into Sunday so I assume we will be crossing the Sound at New London into Shinnecock and will not going the Block Island / Montauk route. I looked at the ocean forecast and saw that the Boston area will be 1- 2ft waves where the Block Island is 2- 4 ft. So, any places to stop, cheap Fuel, good food exc. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks. John G.

I have made the reverse run, comming from Sayville to Boston and in a larger, slower boat (38 ft motor yacht). Its all based on the weather and that is the main reason to ship the boat. No matter how much experience is on board you don't know the boat and a 200 mile open water run is not the place to learn. If you ship you know when it will arrive and it will cost less when you add in dock fees, fuel and all the other exras.
If you do go; get to Long Island, stop at Block only if you have to. Water is nasty off Pt Jude and again off Plum Island. We went through Great South Bay, the canal, stayed in Greenport the first day comming up. However, if you don't know Great South Bay go to Montuk and the next day stay outside as there are many many places to go aground and its a slow ride.
All that being said its a great ride -----but be smart and ship it. Then when you kknow the boat take a cruise.
Bye the way we raced Raven's out of Babylon YC join if you have the chance.

Hi, The shipping option has closed down as per my friend due to the big jump in cost due ( 3x in one month) being prime time and him waiting ( holiday coming.)
He knows the southern route very well. He has gone out to block island every year for the past 25 years in every thing from a 20 ft speed boat to the 28 ft boat, he has now.
I am just trying to help with getting some suggestions on the other side of the Bay.
Thanks. John G.

Sometimes people buy boats locally and never leave the the bay. This will be a great time to really see what it is like to travel by boat to a distant location. It maybe a rough trip or maybe smooth sailing, but it will definitally be a boating memory. Don't miss out and good luck

I've made the GSB to Montauk/Greenport run many times. If weather conditions permit, the Ocean route from Block to Montauk to F.I. Inlet is the fastest most direct route to West Babylon. If you're out in the Ocean and things turn nasty you can duck in at Shinnecock or Moriches Inlets. Moriches was just dredged, however, I don't think it is marked. Staying inside is a nice way to go (shorter in distance, longer in time due to 5 MPH zones), as well, though the Peconic can be pretty nasty on a real windy day, too. If you stay inside, once you're through the Shinnecock Canal the only real tough spot left is Moriches Bay. The water there is very skinny so I only go through there 20 minutes after high tide at the Moriches USCG Station. The bouys were moved last year (not sure if they were moved again this spring) so if you're Chartplotter maps are more than a year old they're not accurate for this area. So long as you follow the channel markers through Moriches Bay and then through Bellport, this is the safest, least exposed option to West Babylon for you. Hope this helps.

Hey John... I ended up NOT taking the trip. I was able to ship the boat for 900 bucks... i would have been looking close to 2k in fuel if I drove. It wasn't so much the money that stopped me... it was the weather. I was only able to take a day off work... and if the weather gets bad and we needed to wait it out, the trip could turn into a 4 or 5 day trip. If I post ponded the trip to the next weekend (and the next weekend weather was bad) then we are getting close to June. I just didn't want to take the chance. :-/

I was told that the seas near Buzzards Bay could get pretty nasty (4 footers easily)... so in a 280 I think would would be taking a bit of a beating.

Good luck with your trip! Please post here how you make out!

Thanks BMAC....Will take pics and post.
My freinds flew up today doing last min. checks on the boat. I will be going tommorow 6:55am JFK to Logan.
Funny thing this is that the flights is $85 total ( Jet blue) and the Cab ride from Logan to the Weymouth town ramp ( 25 min ) is $55 plus tip OUCH! go figure. I Thought NYC was a rip. See ya. John G.

Hey all, Back from my voyage from Boston (Quincy) to long Island NY. (South shore) Plenty off Fog yesterday morning with Rain / Lighting & fog over night.
Took 2 days total. 1st day: Boston to Newport RI. (10:30AM – 7PM)
2nd day: We left RI. At 11:30 am due to Rain and fog and got in at 6:00PM.
There was a North West wind pushing down the waves in the ocean (As per the captain) so we took the southern route of long Island ( outer ) north of block island and angled around Montauk, by far the biggest waves where from after block island area to Montauk with rolling 5 foot waves. We kept outside all the way to the Fire Island inlet.
There where some problems with the boat. One engine was overheating so we where only going 10MPH the first 2 hours ( ugh) until we removed the thermostat and we mostly cruised at 25-28 mph.
I was not impressed with the boat handing and ride, my kidneys still feel it. I guess that’s why they don’t make the Sea ray Sun Sport anymore?
I think if I added a couple of feet to my 25 ft Sundancer The ride would be about the same as his 38ft.
Over all it was different, not looking to do again any time soon. John G
