Books you have enjoyed reading

If you enjoy Buffett's novels, you might also enjoy those of Carl Hiassen. Hiassen is a Miami newspaper writer whose comic novels lampoon Florida developers, politicians and tourists, while bemoaning the disappearance of the 'old Florida'. His style is somewhat manic, and always funny. Light reading for time on the hook sipping a cold one.

I've been reading: Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before by Tony Horwitz. This book explores the genius of Cooks navigation and charting skills and the impact his discoveries had on native societies. The author visits many of Cooks ports. An excellent, intelligent and yet humorous read.

just finished this book. Thumbs up. Great read with great history.

Finished In the Heart of the Sea and it was definitely a great read.

Philbrick's mixture of history, science, and tidbits made an already interesting story even more so.

The execution of Coffin, the decision to get back to SA instead of a simple one week journey to the islands to the west, the fact that Pollard was sucking on the bones of a dead crew member was found...all of it was told incredibly well and backed by scientific and psychological studies of body and mind.

yeah, In the Heart of the Sea is definitely a great read. Then I moved a little earlier with the Blue Latitudes, Also an excellent read.

In keeping with this theme, I just picked up "The Bounty. The true story of the Mutiny on the Bounty". with William Bligh being an officer on Cook's 3rd and final voyage to the Pacific. I had to pick up this book. I hope it's as good as the last two.

I just picked up Thor's The Last Patriot this afternoon. I haven't read anything of his before, but if you put him in the same league as Flynn, Baldacci and Coonts, that's a good enough rec for me. The Assassin by Coonts may be my next one.

I just finished The Assassin by Stephen Coonts. It was pretty good. I have met Mr. Coonts through a mutual friend. He is a very laid back type of guy and his character, Tommy Carmelini is pretty laid back as well. I kind of prefer Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp or Lee Child's Jack Reacher. Neither guy takes crap from anyone. All of the Lee Child books are really entertaining.

I mentioned it before but for a great sea story, The Shipkiller by Justin Scott is awesome even though the main character is on a snailbote. Great story of revenge and a lot of nautical stuff. Almost the whole book takes place at sea. It is out of print but good used copies are available through Amazon. I think I have read this book 6-8 times.

I picked this one up on Matt's (and other's) recommendation. I'm about a third into it, and I'm finding it to be extremely well written, but I'm having a tough time getting "into" it, if you know what I mean. I'll keep plugging, though.......

Cheers,

Bill

I started reading the LotR series again, and am almost done with Fellowship of the Ring.

I have noticed how the movies had pushed out many parts of the book I loved, such as Tom Bombadil and the time in Rivendell, as well as the proper timeline.

Im on the LI ferry today, and plan to make headway into The Two Towers.

If you have never read LotR series, and like fantasy at all, skip the movie, go for the book. It is FAR better than the movie (though the movies are among my fav ever).

I found it picked up steam right about where you are in the book.

My son and I started reading "Treasure Island". He needs to read every night, so we end up reading 2 - 3 chapters per night.

He'd rather stay up and watch the military channel!
