Boca Chita Key

Has anyone stayed overnight at the harbor of Boca Chita Key?

Randy

Boca Chica? I've eaten at the Marina on base many times - even kitesurfed the area, but never stayed overnight. It looks pretty well protected. Prevailing winds are East. You'll be on the leeward side of the key. Lots of boats - must be ok.

No problem John, I can remember going there as a kid with boy scouts (this was before it was owned by the government) I did not remember any base just a bunch of no-see-um.

Randy,

I lived in South Dade in the '70s/early '80s and most of my boating experience is in that area. Boca Chita was still private when I was boating around there but we used to sneak in a nd take a look when we could. It is sort of like Elliott but not quite as big....same beautiful water with shallow approaches. One of my neighbors grew up in South Miam and still go's down about 6 times a year.

I have the "jones" to go back to South Bay but have not found the time. I figure it's about a 80 mile run from here and when I go I plan to stay a few days.

You really and I mean really have to watch the shallows but once you learn your way around it's geat....best boating in Florida in my opinion. I figure I can creep in and out of most places ok because I only draw 28". If you have a dingy and you boat draws more than 3 feet you will be using the dingy a lot.

The closest marina is at Homestead Bayfront Park which is just north of Turkey Point Nuke...easy in and out and easy to find.

If you get down there before I do give us a report.

I think we're going to make plans to head down there later this month. I'd like to stay Friday and Saturday nights and check out the area, check out the island, go fishing and snorkeling. We have a tender so we could get around the island easily.

What special Issues? AT Boca Chita, there are no showers and the restrooms are not freshwater. There is another harbor called Elliot Key Harbor, which is further south of Boca Chita and has freshwater restroom and showers. It is a first come first serve, the same as Boca Chita. You will certainly enjoy either harbor. You can PM me and I will most definitely come raft up with you. Let me know!

That would be great. We're still finalizing our plans and seeing if there are any others who would like to join us. I'll post something when we get done.

Randy,

OK, so lets make plans! It's 63 miles from my house so that's only 17 miles more from yours. Let's head down together and stay a few days

Randy

I'm in for whenever you guys come head down. I'll raft up and hopefully convince my cousin to come out with his 340DA if he's not too busy.

Just a thought..... would your cousin be interested in Memorial Day? His boat is certainly big enough to go.

Also, just curious, what does your screen name mean (papogator24)?

Randy

I will have to ask him about Memorial Weekend. He usually go to the Keys, but now that he has a bigger boat, I am sure he has thought about it. I am going to send him an email about Memorial Weekend.

As for my screen name, papo is sort of my nickname in the family. When I lost my hearing at 18 months old, my dad called me papo as it was easier for me to recognize my name being called while I was going through speech and hearing therapy.

Gator - I graduated from UF and 24 is my football number.

Have you made any plans yet?

There you go! Your cousin comes to Lucaya and you get to go with him. A win-win scenario.

Our plans are still evolving for Boca Chita but here's what we are thinking right now - arrive Friday morning (near high tide) and stay Friday and Saturday nights in the harbor, leaving Sunday mid morning (high tide). Our friends Ray and Cathy are coming on Saturday morning and will stay on their boat Saturday night. We have invited a couple others but don't know if they can make it or not. I would like to see 4-5 boats there overnight. It would be a great time. Talk your cousin into coming and he can meet the Port Lucaya crowd (a small portion anyway).

My son is a UF grad also!

Randy

Talk to you soon

Did we ever find out what the special issues were?

What sprink56 said... shallow channel leading into the harbor (I checked the tables and plan to go in at almost high tide), NO depth outside the channel (need to get there in good light to make sure you stay in the channel. There are markers leading you in), no electric on the island or harbor, no fresh water on the island (we'll run our genny and fill up our water tank before we get there).

I want to go but my schedule is so tight over the next few weeks that I don't know if I can. I'll watch the thread to keep an eye on when you guys plan to go and see if we can muster.
