BoatUS to the rescue.....I think my coupler let go?

Todd,
Last june when lake union had the drive off 2 times to the replace shift cable I was there and they did check the alignment and I looked at the coupler and driveshaft they both were in perfect condition, when they had the engine out a couple weeks ago they checked everything and couldn't find a reason for it going out.
I just bought some parts off ebay from a mercruiser mechanic that retired gimbal bearing with seal, new sea water pump kit he's sending me a list of what parts and tools he has left to sell I'm buying an alignment tool from him if it gets here in time your welcome to use it. I'll forward a copy of parts and tools to you when he sends it me if interested.
P.S. Got 3 nice dungeness keepers yesterday of south end of Maury Island

Thanks guys. I'm going to do the grunt work to get it out and get the engine all pretty and new manifolds, risers, etc, but will let the experts put it all back together.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Having twins I get twice a nervous thinking about this. I give my couplers a additional shot of grease about midseason and might even start doing it more often. I don't know if it will add to the longevity but it makes me feel better. How many hrs did you get out of that coupler? Do you do a lot of slow speed, trolling speed running? How often was your coupler greased?

Woody. It was replaced with the outdrive in Jan '08. It has been maintained as suggested since then. They're still looking into it, but I have awhile before I'll have a structure built in my garage to hoist the engine out. I'll make a new thread once that process begins. We do quite a bit of low speed no wake zone areas done at idle. I've learned that that is not recommended, so I'll change that habit to be at around 1200 rpms.

UPDATE:
After digging through the engine bay and attempting to pull the engine myself, I made the decision to let the pros do it and I'm glad I did. Now that the engine is out I was able to clean the bilge

and get a remote trim switch installed.. Nehalennia is in the shop as we speak getting not only the coupler replaced, but the manifolds and risers. I elected to get the dry joint newer style manifolds and risers.
It's been since August of last year that I've been on the boat, in the water, and I'm ready for a boat ride.

Well, I just got home with Nehalennia in tow and she now has a new exhaust(risers, elbows, manifolds, etc) with the newer style dry joint type AND a new stainless steel coupler. I have not been for a boat ride since Aug of last year. I am itching to get back out. I'll get some pictures of the new accessories in a few minutes but I thought I'd share in my glee.

Todd. Looks great. I hope you get out on the water real soon. I miss not seeing your wonderful boating pics. Take care, Brian

...and halibut soon too.

Just read the latest updates looks like halibut should be good this year with larger quotas. Looks like there is more room by the bell housing to get at things with the new style Y and exhaust pipes or is there? My risers are going to be ready for changing next year interested in how you like the setup after some hours on it.

I didn't spend too much time looking at the access to the transom plate. I do have to get in there today, clean the bilge and reconnect the oil hose from the bottom of the oil pan to the garboard plug.
