I inherited this heater when I purchased the boat this year. I tested it and it seems fine but it looks worn. I am not sure how old it is. I also don't like the fact that there is no power light to let you know it has power. I had an Extreme heater in my prior boat and I really liked it. Does anyone have an opinion on these heaters and should I be concerned wih an older heater?

I've had my boatsafe heater for about....geesh, I don't remember now.....maybe 10 years? It still works like a champ. As far as a red light to let you know it's powered...you wouldn't see it anyway...it's in the bilge.

I plug mine into a watt meter. I also place a remote temp sensor in the bilge. Between the two, I can tell if it's on and if it's maintaining an acceptable temp in the ER.

You can easily test it by putting it in the freezer for a while and plug it in after taking it out or spray some CO2 on it to "freeze" the capacitor on the back of the unit. It should stay on until it warms up.

I too bought a remote temperature sender and monitor it from my home (trailered boat). But they also have wifi units available too so you could monitor from anywhere.

I also have a golden rod that sits under the raw water pump as insurance. That is plugged into a temperature sensitive three prong plug that goes on around 35 and off around 45 or so. http://www.farmandenergy.com/deals/product/thermo-cube-ltd-tc-3-thermocube-energy-saver-B0006U2HD2

These things are built like tanks. We have about 40 in the marina and nobody ever had one fail. My harbor master tells us he has never seen one fail as long as he remembers. Just check the operation with a can of liquid air and if the switch triggers it's good to go. love mine!
