Hello!
I'm looking into getting a bigger boat. I'm sold on Sea Ray. Aside from trying to convince the wife this is smart money spent in New England(HA!), I'm noticing something in my very casual window shopping.

I've seen Sea Ray and other boats with MS HID #'s for sale up in NY, VT and NH.. I actually took a drive last summer to Lake George NY to look at a 1999 Sea Ray Signature 230, if memory serves. I found the boat on Craigslist and after some phone and email correspondence setup a time to view the boat. I drove the 2.5 hours to see the boat, in the water at a marina. I wasn't bashful in my investigation. The motor looked new, which was a good thing, but the upholstery staples and other hardware and fittings on starboard side of the boat were totally rusted. The port side was flawless. There was some padded trim pieces missing from the starboard side (inconsistent with the pictures provided) yet port side was fine.

The Hull ID was from Miss. and it occurred to me, could this be one of those boats salvaged from when Hurricane's Katrina and Rita hit in 2005? In my searching used Sea Ray's the best priced boats are often have Southern HID's of (example MS 1234 A). Does anyone know if I'm thinking too much of this or am I onto something?

Thank you!!

Not at all. It is a very good question. I have seen this alot working with my dad (he is a broker). Lots of boats that had sunk during hurricanes were moved farther north and resold. It is very easy to do. There is a company here that asked me to help list and sell some for them. They were a mechanic shop. I found out that most were insurrance claims and hurricane boats being passed as if nothing was wrong. I walked away from them I do like to sleep at night knowing I didn't screw someone over. There are some good boats out there but a detailed survey (with a good surveyor) will tell all. One we used does a search on where the boat has been and sometimes requests the outdrive be pulled for inspection. Good luck with your search.

By HID you mean the registration numbers? If so hull numbers starting with MS are from Massachusetts. State boat registration codes do not necessarily match the Post Office state abbreviations.

Henry

I believe the MS you are seeing is a Mass registration.

Henry beat me to it.

I have noticed a couple of boats at my marina that have MS as their registration. I didn't ask for fear that someone was trying to save on taxes here in CT. Not sure what their circumstances were but curious now.

Henry you're right!!! Thank you!

Interesting. I thought they would match the postal codes. Learn something new every day.

The boat we just purchased in MA didn't have hull numbers on it. Is that normal? However, her name and port were on the stern.

May be documented with the CG....In which you don't have to display them.

You are confusing me.

I know hull ID from the manufacturer, state registration, and Coast Gaurd documentation number. Several of these posts have not been clear what they meant, to me.

The hull number is the registered number that you put on that starts with the State and then alpha numerics.

The Manufacturer ID # is the serial # given by the Manufacturer and the CG # is your ID from the CG which to my knowledge is not displayed directly on the boat but is on your documentation. I believe it is renewed annually but don't quote me on that.

You do have to display it somewhere on the boat. Has to be attached to a secure surface. Most put in the engine room.

Wait a minute. Let's do the numbers!

The Hull ID, or HIN is provided by the manufacturer. It is molded into the hull usually at the starboard stern quarter. You can think of this as the 'serial number' for the boat.

If you document your boat, you give the HIN to the USCG and they issue a Documentation Certificate and Number. The Documentation Number must be permanently attached to the hull/structure of the boat. There are other requirements.

If you register your boat in the state that you use it, you will be given a registration number. This you display on the bow of the boat and these numbers begin with the state codes that ejfd16 posted in the table above. You can think of this being like a license plate number on a car.

Correct....What I was saying is you do not have to display the registration numbers if the boat is documented by the Coast Gaurd.
