350mag B3,
I know this was discussed before but I hate the search function. Anyhow, living in NC, we receive a letter each year around now asking whether I'm liable for the tax on it for the next year. It goes like this

1- My boat should be listed for tax purposes in the county listed above

2-My boat was listed in another county in NC on Jan 1 2010 and has been listed for tax purposes in that county

3- My boat was not located in NC on Jan 1 2010 and is not subject to NC tax

4- I did not own this boat on Jan 1 2010.

It sure sounds to me that if I take a little trip to Myrtle Beach, SC for New Years, I'm not liable for tax in NC. And as far as I know, South Carolina will not charge property taxes to me either since I will be there for less than 90 days.

I know this cannot exactly be legal but, I hear of tons of others who do exactly this to avoid the tax. Anyone here do this and get away with it?

I'll be suprised if anyone answers your question by admitting they cheat but:huh:. How do they figure the tax? How much would it cost you?

A property tax on your boat? On top of the regular licensing fees?

Its about a grand for the taxes this year. The county my boat resides in has a fairly high rate on personal property compared to many others from what I understand. The trip to Myrtle Beach is 45min...

I have been told by a few people that they go out of state for the day, week, whatever and keep the receipt for dockage as proof of being in another state on the 1st.

Pages 10 thru 12 should make things pretty clear.

Well color me naive. I had no idea some states charge property tax on boats! Is this on top of state sales tax at purchase?

My God, the Founders are rolling in their graves! :-(

(sorry for the off topic, but I'm in shock here)

In NC, the annual property tax is on top of the original sales tax beginning in the year after you purchase. This is the same with cars and motorcycles in our state. I know - I pay on them all!

California makes us pay property taxes based on the value of the boat as well and their concept of value is much higher than fair market. It is a pretty steep bill every year.

Well, I just crossed North Carolina off the list of states that I wanted to move to some day....

Yep, the joke is you never want to die in NC they just keep taxing you after your long gone. Being a realtor in GA, but I have a reciprocal license in NC that I pay $50 a year for I then get to pay NC a $75 a year privilege tax, because I pay them $50 a year.:smt089

No kidding! America is self-destructing! :-(

I say we start giving politicians one-way rides to the middle of large bodies of water. Maybe then they could start remembering what liberty and property rights are all about!

(sorry for the rant, but this stuff makes me sick!)

Hey NC gets you coming, going and while you are there.

In Alaska, it used to be free as we would register with the USCG. But the state took it over and now it is $24 a year to register my boat, no taxes..............:smt038

I guess I'll just call it a small price to pay to be able to boat yr round  Even though it's not gonna make it out of the 30's tomm, I'll be spending the day onboard. In fairness though, our property taxes on our homes does seem to be much cheaper than my northern neighbors. I'd have to live in a cardboard box if I were in Jersey...

I didn't make the trip to SC, smoked pig and a huge aluminum beer can were calling me instead.

Thanks for the link Woody, that pretty much sums it up.

Real estate taxes in NC are half of what is paid in many northern states. Even factoring in the taxes on boats, cars, etc. its still a lot less expensive here than up north. I know because I used to live in the northeast.

I used to pay $800 per year in KY for my Silverton. With the economic downturn, it was fun printing out the new NADA and saving $200 when I mailed it to the state.

Scott, definitely add KY to your list. Property tax on boats, property tax on slips, high county taxes on fuel...

I will be getting a property tax assesment from the city my boat is moored in (or the county) for the land under the water where I berth! :smt101

NC taxes are not even comparible to the NE. I have lived in both areas and I would be more than glad to pay NC taxes. What sucks is when your property taxes on your home exceed the amount of your mortgage per month.

I welcome you all to visit "Taxachusetts".
I pay excise tax to the town where the marina is,
I pay a morring fee for the slip to the town where I have my slip,
I pay an excise tax to the town I reside in because I own a boat larger than 17 feet.
I pay sales tax on the fuel that is approx 70% of the cost of fuel.
All of these based on value of the boat during that year
On a good note:
I escaped the yearly registration fee from the state by documenting the boat with the US Coast Guard with only a one time fee:smt038

No such thing as property taxes on boats here, and no state income taxes, either...
But I suppose the sheer cost of just insuring a boat down here evens it out.

We don't have personal property taxes in New Jersey, but our real estate taxes will knock your socks off.
