Boating accident over the weekend

What a shame. The report I heard on a local station said that neither were wearing PFDs. I just checked the boating regs for LA, and PFDs are a requirement on jet skis. A tragedy that likely could have been prevented.

And they were not wearing their life jackets either. :smt009

The Jet Ski accident was so preventable. :smt009
Bad news in both stories. :smt018
I can understand not wearing your life jacket while underway; many of us don't, but when you have made the distress call or are making the distress call your other arm should be entering a PFD. Meanwhile your crew should be already scrambling to get theirs on.

I have jetskis.

Life jackets on those is simple common sense. Far too easy to be thrown off. Heck, you can even tip at the dock if you are not smart (or have a small ski). It is not uncommon to be FORCED into the water to clear impeller intakes while riding. I am in the water probably once every other month for this work (often with 1'-2' swells)

Not wearing one makes you a candidate for a Darwin Award.

If you want to go overboard, helmets are not a bad idea when you have a high performance ski. I personally don't believe in these.. .but I could make the case for them. I have seen some teenagers with helmets (I stay away from them. . . because those that wear them seem to be doing things that would make you want a helmet!)

Less than 3 miles from our marina, a 24 year old male jumped out of a boat while underway. He survived the first stunt, the second one, reported at a higher speed, cost him his life. That was on Saturday, he was found during a dragging operation on Sunday morning. I'm not certain why the others aboard couldn't talk him out of this stunt. On his second jump, witnesses believe the boat may have been traveling 45 mph or more :smt009
