does anybody know where to take a boater safety course? i'm in the south shore and looking to save some insurance money plus i have been away from boating for a while and could use a refresher for peace of mind. I don't really count what i did with my 170 signature as "boating" it was almost always kept on a private lake and almost always the only boat on the water.

Try boat-ed.com, I think they have a course for each state. I di mine there for Maryland. All online, takes about 3 hours.

If you want an actual classroom, for us here in Mass look no further than Boatwise. Husband and wife captains run it. Plenty of locations you can sign up for around our area. I've had my whole family take the safety course and I've done plenty of others there as well, like navigation and adv nav. They offer an on boat set of courses too like night nav, radar etc.

Also, most Coast guard Auxillary stations give them in the winter just google it . They are usually held nearby in a high school/library. Good idea by the way

thanks guys. i lost the card I got at the boat show in Boston from the couple that runs the courses at Boatwise. i'll check out the online courses as well.

You can take it online, but let me suggest you attend a class and take it in person. You will gain a LOT from the others in the classroom. Lots of local information about where to boat, things to be careful of, etc., that you will not get online.

I've taken a boating safety course five times, twice with GW, and always in a classroom setting.

Over the years I have taken the Power Squadron class twice and the Coast Guard class once. They are worthwhile and a lot of fun.

Check out barecove.org

That is the local power squadron based in Hingham. Last fall I signed up for their class on marine electrical systems... unfortunately it was cancelled due to lack of interest.

Probably a good idea to sign up and have Axillary do a courtesy exam while your at it. Google it prior to see the list and make certain all your bases are covered. Mike

i can't remember if it is the power squadron or the auxillary that does it but the second weekend in May they do a courtesy check on every boat at our marina that is willing. i have already marked my google calander. but thanks, that is a great idea.
