Boat US - GEICO insurance

IIRC, GEICO operates as an insurance agency for boats not necessarily the carrier.

I have been dealing direct with SkiSafe for the past few years - no problems but then again no claims.

Seems to be something that you regularly need to shop but since most offer a reduced deductible based on the policy years for the vessel without claims they try to keep you coming back.

I am thinking about switching also.....my dock friend has a 34' Cruisers Yacht....he said at first he had his boat insurance bundled in with his house and autos...I believe he said he has Allstate insurance....he contacted GEICO to get a quote for his boat insurance...the exact same coverage from GEICO cost 1/2 of what Allstate was charging even at the bundled rate....he even showed the Allstate agent the quote from GEICO to be sure it was the same coverage....his agent said it was the same and said he saw no reason my friend should not switch to GEICO for his boat coverage....

I have gieco for my formula and vehicles. They were 1/2 th price on my cars that country companies was, 1/2 the price on the formula than american family was. However, they were 20% higher than global marine was on my sea ray, go figure. No claims experience. Give it a shot.

I've had NBOA as my broker for 10+ years - no claims. They were 60% higher on my new boat than BoatUS/Geico. NBOA also wanted restrictions since I moved up more than 10' (Captain signoff/Cruising restrictions).

Really surprised me at the differences. It seems Warren Buffett bought Seaworthy Marine Insurance and folded it into Geico.

I go through a broker with a Chubb policy. Prices have been good and am in the middle of an injury claim. They have been pretty good.

Geico-BoatUS - I've had them on my boat for 8+ years. One claim handled it fairly, not quickly as there was some mis-communication between the agent and the surveyor which caused some delay. But overall happy with them. In my case they were about 15% higher then NBOA but within reason and based on my good experience I kept them.

I have Geico for homeowners (travelers underwrites), Auto, and now boat. We were BoatUS customers before the Geico change and as a result we saved a few bucks having all 3. No claims thankfully, but I did start the process last year when I thought I had an underwater strike and they were very responsive. Ultimately I dropped the claim but it was promising to see the response. Our yacht policy with replacement value of 35k including freeze protection and no depreciation of gear until the boat is 20 years old runs us right around 500/yr. I thought that was pretty fair.

I had NBOA since 2008 and switched to BoatUS/Geico last year and have been very happy. They were much less expensive but what I liked most is that they gave me an agreed value for my boat. That was important for me since I have an older boat and I couldn't replace it for the amount I actually paid. I talked to the agent and we looked up Blue Book values and I explained the condition, etc and they agreed to go a little higher than max Blue Book. NBOA and State Farm wouldn't do agreed value and they were much higher so it made sense to me.

I was with Alstate with a 25 foot Baja, then when I made the move to a 34 baja with twins they where rediculously priced.
I swapped eveyrthing to GEICO, at that time and saved on cars, bikes, and boats.

Just activated the Sea Ray yesterday for the purchase and they again did me well

GIECO did boats with Seaworthy.

then GEICO bought Seaworthy

then bought boatUS as well.

Another satisfied customer! We love them!

We've found them to be the cheapest and very helpful. We checked with other places, no complaints, just price.

I talked to someone from NBOA about a yacht policy, and never heard back.

Good luck!

i just completed an on-line application for a GEICO policy for my boat based on the same coverage of my current policy with State Farm (bundled house, autos, and boat)......the GEICO quote came back about $300 (annually) higher than the Sate Farm rate.....

Does Geico own Boat US in whole or just the Insurance leg?

I dont know the answer to that part, I would assume just the insurance portion.

I had Seaworthy which became Geico Marine. Had the best prices I could find and they are super simple to deal with in the billing. I've never had a claim, so I cant speak to that.

I've got two boats insured right now.
#1- 2005 Maxum 18' Bowrider. I shopped around for the best price on this one last June and Boat US gave me the best price by a big percentage. It's a Geico Policy.
#2- 2002 410 Sundancer. I shopped around on this one when I bought the boat this past December. NBOA had the best price by a lot and the company they put me with is AIG.
My old 300 Sundancer was with ACE through a local broker. I checked with that broker for both of the boats I currently have now and their best prices were higher than the companies I ultimately wound up going with.
Morale of the story: Shop around. Even if your dockmate who has the exact same make, model, year boat as you do is getting his best price from the company he is with it could be different for you. You, your location, and your individual boat all impact the price you pay with different companies and prices can be all over the place.

last year.. Geico was about $500 a year less for more coverage in my area.. this year my rate went up $80..

Does Geico own Boat US in whole or just the Insurance leg?

No, Geico does not own BoatUS. They partner with BoatUS to give BoatUS members discounts on insurance. BoatUS has their own insurance too and when you get a quote, they will either issue the policy under themselves or Geico depending on the situation. I don't know their criteria for sending some policies to Geico and keeping some in-house.

Let me caution many of you who only shop for insurance based on the price. A year and a half ago we had an electrical issue on our boat. Here's a link if you want to read about it. http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/76225-I-d-like-you-to-meet-my-friend-Murphy?highlight=runaway

To make a long story short, the insurance I now have has completely covered the repairs to the boat to the tune of a bit north of $35,000.

What I have is called a "yacht policy" and that has nothing to do with the size of the boat you're trying to insure. It's all about the coverage they offer and the yacht policy is heads and shoulders above as typical "boat policy" this is offered by companies that don't specialize in marine insurance. Companies like Allstate, State Farm, Geico and many others offer boat policies.

It would probably pay for you to investigate the difference between what a Yacht Policy covers vs what a Boat Policy covers.
